It is difficult to look at the appropriate picture you selected to reinforce your free verse about a very important subject. I admired your pleading the "case" of the abused woman and her dream of "marrying a rainbow" was memorable. Your final stanza is quite inspirational. Cheers- Joan

Excellent

Often a husband's validation is fine. You should see how my cousin and his wife interact. Sweeet! Women should never have to go thru what that poor woman did. She looks like one of the ISIS wives, who have to put up with whatever the husband dishes out. Sad. What can we do? Nothing, except hope she can escape. And that she is not caught and killed when she tries. Good, evocative poem.

I do hope you found your way out of that hell. I seen my mom go through the same thing, you just have cut your loses get out of it fast as you can run. I see it did make you into strong writer I do hope you keep it up, I find that it helps me to help others. GB

This is horrific, what battered wives go through. You described it very graphically. The statistic is, every 9 minutes another woman dies at the hand of an abusivw spouse/partner.

Your picture is very powerful too.

Thank you for raising awareness to this. This needs to be heard.

This is a nice poem. It gives the most minute imagery of what a battered person feels as they face the demon in their life, who is one they once (or still do) loved. Some deep emotions going on with the desire for, and discovering of, the power to run, and stay away. Thank you for sharing.

Another painful read, yet oddly beautiful in the phrasing you use. You mention "we, who have escaped" and I wonder about your own past, which isn't in the notes - but tell me nothing, if you care not to.

One suggestion I have, which you should feel free to completely ignore, is to use longer lines - condense the poem somewhat. It might make the read flow more like stream of consciousness.

but wishes and dreams don't really come true
thus, I plead for her case;
allow her to borrow your memories, please,
so she can fill up the blank pages
in the faded diary sitting idle
far too long on her empty table. (??)

Just a thought. I really love your writing as-is, it is always very moving.

No person should be a whipping post for their mate. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very good read. It would be a blessing to know that abusers spent an eternity in Hell being abused.

God bless you, Susan for the work you do for people like this woman in your poem. It is a raw write, but the truth in life is not always as pretty as we would like it to be...is it. Nobody knows that better than you, of course. Bless you, my friend:
