I'd suggest posting a number for help in your author notes because you don't know who is ready this. My husband and I had the talk before we got married of things that would make us file for divorce without talking. One of mine was if he ever hit, pushed, kicked, made me feel unsafe, etc., I'd be gone in a heartbeat. I got married to be loved and treasured and I cannot imagine what you write about. They say getting out is the worse part of it all. The most dangerous. I hope all those in the circumstance can find peace and start healing.

Thanks a lot for resonating with the message and for the perceptive suggestion. That's a good pre-nuptial arrangement, that will protect of course, a wife from future abuse. I just hope it will be enacted into law, that a pre-nuptial contract must be signed by both parties before plunging into marriage.

Oh yeah we didn't sign anything. We just sat down and went over what we expected and all that before hand. You can also have a prenup expire after 15 years or whatever you decide. My aunt signed a prenup because my uncles family thought she was in it for the money and that was it. It was like a 10 year prenup and then it went away. They've been married over 20 years, she showed them it was for love not money.

A powerful write on the psyche of a woman who has had the
misfortune of being trapped in a cruel and loveless marriage.
Her hopes and aspirations battered into submission - left only
with blank pages in her journal of dreams.

Those of us who have been fortunate enough to have found an
alternative path can but cry for their plight.

You always do such a good job of getting into the psyche of abused people. This is written very creatively, very poetic indeed. I think my favorite phrase is: from the missing debris. That says so much.

Your words really show the fear why people put themselves in positions the truth is they don't feel they are worth anything better. Yet dreaming of a better life shows a glimpse of hope.

Such a sad poem. There is no real answer to this, is there. I've raised my children to respect life, all life. Maybe that is the key. But who knows. Your poem validated the abused woman's voice. The imagery was stark and reflected the hopelessness of their situation. Loved the borrowing dreams to put on an empty journal. Great job. Gretchen

Nassus, you have written a powerful and thought provoking free verse here, sadly, about a situation that happens all too often. You have brought that perspective to the fore well in this poem. Warmest regards, Marijke :o)

What makes this work so well for me is the contrast you make between those who enjoy a normal loving arrangement and those who do not. You make your reader sit up and think, in terms of this contrast. Your vivid and forceful example of the callous sexual union (one revolts at the idea of describing it as lovemaking) has immediate dramatic impact, underlining both the one-sidedness of the union and the utter despair of the abused woman who is locked in this relationship. In many ways this is a superb poem.

The answer is in the last line, of endless possibilties. Wife beaters will never change, perhaps from physical to verbal, but they will remain bullies. Pack your bags, grab the kids and embrace the 'endless possibilities'. Anything is better, probably more so, than staying with a man like that. If a man ever hit me... he had better sleep with one eye open. Cheers, judester

Hello,

I was an advocate for battered women and victims of rape for two years. It's a difficult job but it must be done.

Bringing this kind of horrible crime to the light is very important.

What a powerful piece and poem. Women suffer abuse all over the world. Whether they marry due to forced cultural requirements or by their choice.
