Many things concerning the morals of society have changed since 1955, Janet, not the least of which is how promiscuity is viewed today. Does it even exist in society anymore in the way it was once perceived?
Thankfully rape is still considered a vile act of cruelty, an act of power perpetrated by a man against a woman or young girl. Sometimes it's even a child, God forbid.
Your poem is very well written, certainly well rhymed, and makes its point very clearly.
Excellent work!

Thank you Dean for your thoughtful and encouraging review. I'm not sure how promiscuity is viewed today. I think it is actually accepted but fortunately, rape is still considered a vile act especially to children.

Such a sad truth in this. I went riding around with an older guy when I was 16 too. He took me out into the country. When I didn't accept his advances on me, he got angry. He took me back to town and dropped me off at a convenience store. I was stupid for going but lucky. I had forgotten about until I read your poem.

What a haunting poem reflective of the times not all that long ago. In America...we've come along way, baby! I can't imagine the horror, and then the undeserved shame that followed rape. It's no wonder so many went unprosecuted.

Yes this did happen unfortunately, but I remember most girls were kept home in their youth, my girls had no desire to go out, we drove them to and from sctivities and either watched them play or picked them up from sporting or dance duties, and as far as I know were always fine. Precious children were molested. Society's attitudes have changed over the years, I don't think I would ever judge them. Well done Janet, nicely written, even metered abcb rhyming and 8686 quatrains, good work, blessings, Roy

Thank you Roy for your thoughtful and encouraging review. I kept a very close eye on my daughter as well. We lived in the country so we too have to drive her to what ever activities she was in. I think that was a good thing.

Great description of an event in rhyme. In our state, there is no statute of limitation on sexual abuse. She can sue and send him to jail. We are lucky.
Nice work.

Thank you for your thoughtful and encouraging review. I'm glad to hear that there are some states with no statute of limitation on sexual abuse. There shouldn't be.

I really loved this! How sad that the times treated young girls and women in that fashion. The poem certainly makes the reader feel so badly for the character! I believe that poetry is meant to make people feel something.

I'm particularly fond of this verse:
When she arrived back home that night
With bruises on her cheek
Her momma saw her tattered dress
But neither one could speak.

It really speaks to the shocking realization of what had occurred, and the helplessness they both felt, knowing there would be no justice.

Thanks so much for sharing this!

The regular beat of your verses belies the rotten crime. The regularity of verse resounds with the innocent 50's. The cruelty is camouflaged by that innocent form. It is a truly accomplished poem. The rhyming is very satisfying.

Of course it is your choice, but the photo could be a little smaller. Your poem is very strong, but might be swamped by the image above it. Great photo!

Thank you Penelope for your thoughtful and encouraging review. I will have to look at the photo size. I'm not sure I know how to make it smaller but I can see what you mean.

I love the artist you chose and the picture goes great with your wonderfully lined poem. It is lined perfectly yet on so sad. It breaks my heart indeed. I know how it feels. Excellent poem.

Very well-metered, well-rhymed, well-messaged poem.
Times haven't changed according to crime stories on TV--the defense still tries to blame the girl. So sad, but we've all watched other movies where once the girl has grown up a little more, she meets a nice man who understands and her life blossoms after that. Even with the sad outcome, I still like the way you handled your poetry.
