Why am I not surprised you whipped up this creation in only ten minutes or so? (It's the same reason I am reluctant to review very often for some of the writers I follow - I'm out of sixes and I'm pretty sure I'm going to need one! Mind you, when I know a writer often receives that rating, I do like to save the little darlings for some who DON'T often receive that little yellow cross but have written something extraordinary.)

As always, wonderful!

    Thanks, Dawn.

The beauty of the Potlatch challenge is the lack of pressure to come up with something serious, and I know I can do the rhyme and meter thing fairly easily.

Oh, I just did something similar tonight (well last night, now - it's 6:30 A.M.- lol) with Gloria's challenge. I've done a couple of the potlatch challenges too. They're great fun. It's just finding time! YIKES!

Hi Steve

Sorry I'm so late to review, this week with a close relative in hospital, who has just passed away. :(

Nevil Shute a fave of mine. The old movie is till in my head and that title. :) So pleased to see you pop in to Potlatch. I liked your take on the challenge with something different, then I just came across LIJ's. At least we appreciate a good book. Ten minutes to write ... clever you! Great meter and rhyme as to be expected. I've enjoyed your take on the theme ... you brought back some old memories ... maybe this might predict the future after all. Great with "Shute: and "beaut -- and you're not even Aussie, or maybe you do say that in New Zealand? haha! A great piece. Hugs - Lovi xoxox PS Mine was late and has now used up the certificate ... if you have time I just posted a practice octogram and it's paying!

    Hi.
Oh, I hope we don't have this in our future. No telling though if those crazy Americans elect the Trump!

I did live in Queensland for 12 years! I may have picked up an Aussie expression or two - not that Strine is that different from Newzild anyway.

An excellent write in a very short time frame, Steve! I like the unique approach that you took in writing this, to step outside the box, to make your write work for 'On the Beach' ... clever! Fave line: "you penned this tale, you little beaut!". :)

Well done!

    Thanks, Connie.

How to speak Australian (aka Strine)
    1. Add a syllable to all names and common nouns that only have one syllable to start with. I am Steve-o.
    2. Subtract a syllable from anything that is too long e.g. beauty becomes beaut.

    Steve-o

LOL ... thanks for the quick lesson in Strine, Steve-o! Should I ever go to Australia or meet someone from Australia, I'll implement the Strine lingo.

PS: My actual given name is Cornelia, not Connie ... so ...I'll sign off today as Corn or Con-o? :) :)

Oh, I do remember 'On the Beach' and how everyone suddenly woke up to the fact that we not only were capable, but were actually likely to self-annihilate in the very near future. There were a lot of evangelists shouting 'Repent!' outside the theatres across the land when it came out.

That movie made huge impact - I don't know if any of today's kids would get it - but, I read a back-page story today that Putin said that he might use a nuke on a small island off the coast of Scotland. He claimed it might kill as many as 200,000 people. This he would do just to show the world that Russia is still a contender in the nuclear arena. Perhaps we should all watch On the Beach again.
Loved your contribution, Steve. Your mind is always looking for that different POV and you achieved it here.
Rose.

    Hi, Rose.

I think we were a bit obsessed with the coming doomsday, back then. Of course we came close with the Cuban Missile Crisis in 1962. Hadn't seen that story about Putin. Can you imagine how long it would take President Trump to get offside with him?

    Thanks for the warm words.

A President Trump scares the bejeezuz out of me. It should scare everyone else that loves their life and the earth too.
reply by the author on 31-May-2016
Scares the bejeezus out of anyone with any sense. The truly scary thing is seeing how many people there re who don't have any sense. What dark and horrible places have they all crawled out of?
reply by Just2Write on 01-Jun-2016
I don't know - but I wish they'd crawl back in. It's my hope that for the primaries, voter turn out has been poor, and when the 'real' election takes place, the Americans will wake up and get out and vote for someone else. R.

Great entry to the challenge, Steve.
Good Octogram form as to rhyme, meter,
and repeating line. Funny how one tiny little word can
create a whole new thought process - from a fun day at
the beach to the tragedy of war.

Yes, the difference should be subtle, but the title is so familiar to me that my mind automatically jumps there.

Hi Steve,
nice job on this, and original too. On the Beach was not a book that I read, but I have heard the tales from that time, and seen many movies...
A great take on the challenge. I did mine about 6 hours late, but it's there if you're dying for another 32 FS cents!

Thanks, Carol.I was a voracious reader at a very young age. Once I discovered an author like Shute, I would read everything of his I could lay my hands on. Of course, authors during that period were very concerned with doomsday scenarios - this was one of the better ones, exploring just how ordinary people faced inevitable death.

I'll keep an eye out for your Octigram.

Hello Steve,
I think you have one of the fastest wits on site. You must. Because I have a VERY quick wit, and I write VERY quickly, but I notice you, and Mikey are probably the ones who respond with quick witted stuff (so does evilynne, but not poetry) the quickest... like, even if it's a limerick, you belt them out fast. ;)
I like that. I used to work for a dentist and he and I were like a sit down comedy team back and forth over the patients. lol
they said they didn't even mind getting root canals because it was so much fun to listen to. LOL
Anyway, this poem is great, perfect meter and form. And even though I'm one of those those say, "at the beach" also. lol I thought it quite clever.
Great job and quite quick as well.

Do you know that definition of repartee - it's what you think of on the way home from the party. I'm afraid, despite your pereption, that my wit is very much like that. I CAN spit out doggerel verse very fast, so I'll lay claim to quickness in that department.

We as families are regularly go to the beach to relax and enjoy the day out in the open fresh air and cool water of the ocean to cool us down when the sun gets too hot.

Yes, I remember both reading the 1957 book and seeing the 1959 film (starring Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Fred Astaire, and Anthony Perkins) during my early teens. It was quite an unnerving thought at the time, that crazy leaders might destroy humanity in senseless war -- and, sadly, it's still true. Well done.

Yes, it was a recurring theme at the time. Just watched the movie 'The Sum of All Fears' based on a Tom Clancy novel - I guess the 'fears' are still here.

You are welcome, Steve. If the tiny minority of heartless, power-mad "leaders" were one day simply trampled by the rest of us, the whole world would become a paradise for all in relatively short time. -- Mike
