WOW! you said a mouth full. Amen to a lot of what you've said. Not sure where the world is heading but it needs to correct it's course before we're all dead. Thanks for a great read. Mary

Thanks very much for reading and reviewing, and I hope it's not as bad as the media paints it, and that we can choose better paths for a while...

You're right about there being no way back - two thirds of the people on earth would have to die. Nobody backtracks, ever, it seems. The only way is forward, and science sure as HELL is the only way to get there. But it has to be used with empathy and compassion, or it will end up killing us (and maybe we deserve it)

Loved this:
Then power it up and ask it:"Is there a Supreme Being?"
It will reply, "There is now."

I think that the future will include far fewer "food beasts", or maybe none. The only way to feed the increasing numbers of people is to stop using land to grow corn and alfalfa for cows, and stop growing the cows too, and grow food that people can eat. Rice, beans, soybeans, whatever.

I won't be around to see it, thank god.

A great piece of "tell it like it is". It seems like there's not really any way back from where we've got ourselves, short of some Orwellian / Huxleyan nightmare. We can't feed the people we've got now, and based on the figures you've given for the last century we are in deep doodoo long before another goes by.

But let's not go all doomsdayer - the insects (some of them) might survive.

The only real issue I've got with what you said is that there's no such thing as "necessary food beasts".

A thoughtful and amusing (in a dark way) piece, nice work.

Thanks much for reading and reviewing. We are indeed moving into hazardous ground. Any way we
work it out, it spells limits to what we can waste...

Hi Red,

Brilliant. Quite simply brilliant. Train of thought genius.

And God must stay out of the school house. All gods. Allah, too. If mine can't go there, yours should not be allowed in, either. - I think this is probably the best statement I've heard regarding this issue and I hope a lot of people see it and respond to it.

All right, here we are, too many of us, and the sky is falling like acid rain and the sea is rising and mutilated boys are peeing in the ladies room. - superb again here.

decisions should be made with cold, mechanical logic with the needs of the many the prime directive. - because the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few, or the one (Thank you Mr Spock).

I salute you.

Red, you should have entered this in a contest. (Essay in July?) You have written down what many are thinking, but too afraid to say. Me included. I love it when you write like this. Even your fiction rings true with your use of real events as inspiration. This post could and maybe should be published in a blog or newspaper. Opinion column? You'd be amazed at the responses this would snare. :D

Thanks very much for reading and reviewing. This was inspired by the constant haggling, accusing and denying of people who seem to be motivated by greed. I just wish that majority of good guys would speak up more. Thanks, too, for the sixth star. A great surprise on this post.

God help my soul if I have to depend on a politician to protect me. This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very interesting read.

Like every enterprise of man, America has had it's high moments and low, and considerable luck.
Let's hope that luck holds...but the odds are not what they once were. Thanks very much for reading and reviewing.

I don't know how I can help but give this a six, Red, especially since I thought from the first paragraph you were building up to a grand goodbye from FanStory. This is some of the most iconoclastic, witty, downright guffawable prose you've written here--and you say you've dried up. If you divvied up your creative juices among the young whippershitters out in FS land, you'd still have enough left over to last the rest of your lifetime, then will over the rest to me.

I'm still hoping for that explosion of inspiration and classic fiction masterwork, but for now a six from a talent like Jay will keep me plugging along. Thanks much for reading and reviewing.

Geeze Ellijay I think you've found your calling--Op-Eds. This is as good as any I've read especially regarding the media.

What an thought provoking question. How many resources do we spend trying to protect ourselves from each other, mega bucks and those are only the surface level protections. There's a whole book in that thought.

I agree all gods stay out of public discourse. That's where trouble always comes in.

HAHA. A totally objective computer can certainly do the job and it, unlike us, can in fact multitask.

Your wit and sarcasm is incredibly entertaining. I really enjoyed this little romp through your thought process.

Gloria

PS: I just got 25 cents bonus from your lucky leprechaun certificate too. ;-)

Well such a fun little rant to start my morning reading and reviewing! I think you covered nearly everything--all the frustrations in life and the world.

Great ending - Hillary, lawyers, doctors and insurers -- the cure-alls to all.

Red, this is the most thought provoking piece you've invented in awhile and I find it to be spot on. Good for you for calling the world crap, a mess of confusion by a bunch of whiners who can't unglue their phones from their mealy, meek hands.
One of my favorite parts was your review on America. Can't go back to simpler times without getting rid of two thirds of the people. I could do without two thirds of the people and their thought process. I definitely agree with the "If my God can't go to school your god can't either."
The concept of the mega computer was intriguing.
This is a great piece to ponder and I am so glad it was you who wrote it.

    great rating.
