This was very VERY well written and I enjoyed reading every word of it. In fact, I had to read it twice. You captured the meaning and emotion perfectly.

I think this is an exceptional poem, and so sorry about your mother's passing, which your poem seems so very appropriate for today being Mom's day . And hope too, that when you do submit your poem, that you are allowed to also use author notes ( or let them know about her like we were able to, so their knowledge about her life, and about this bird is also given to them.

God Bless, and Best wishes for your entry...Caressa_08

Yes, I did not realize that I was posting this poem on Mother's Day until I saw other poets' tribute to their mothers. Thank you for your generous, six star review and for wishing me best wishes for the contest. God Bless.

A wonderful story told in poetic form. The likening of your mother to a mythical bird is very well done:

'Like the egg on the back
and then in the beak of Sankofa,
my mother carried me first in her womb
and then on her back
until she could carry me no more'

That sums up motherhood, doesn't it?

I'm sorry your mother is no longer with you, she sounds like a great woman, a positive force in your life.

Good luck in the contest

Yes, Sarkems, I am a storyteller more than I am a poet. I am glad I told her story in poetic form and likened her to the Sankofa bird. She was a great woman and a positive force in my life. Thank you for your review.

This is a beautiful poem telling a story within. It's also a lovely tribute not only to mother's day but also in remembrance of your mother. Good luck with in the contest. All the best. Ulla:)))

Thank you, Ulla, for your review. It just occurred to me as I was posting it that today was Mother's Day. I am glad that I finally wrote a great poem for my mother. Thank you for wishing me all the best.

This reads like a 'dance poem' and it is easy to see where the movement will come from. The imagery is very strong and the reader can make links with the different parts of the poem and with their own lives. The use of alliteration is highly effective. Good luck for the contest.

This is a great story in a poem, Cis Cat, and I can imagine you reciting it.As I read noting that the dance is involved, I could also see the dancers in the background. Without any personal experience, admittedly, I still felt the poem lent itself strongly to dance. I couldn't find anything to adjust - seems perfect. My very best wishes for the competition, Giddy

Thank you, Giddy, for your generous, six star review. I had to push myself to write a poem that women could danced. I saw the photographs of the jellyfish costumes dancers wore when a poet wrote an ode to jellyfish. I can only imagine what they would do for my poem about the Sankofa bird. Thank you for your review.

I enjoyed the verses as they made your journey from womb to tomb as they say. She was true to her culture and nurtured the best she could and as much as we try to ignore, deep down we listen. It may have been to late to appreciate the living but she made her point and her culture carries on. Great job and I look forward to reading more of your work.

Thank you, John, for your generous, six star review of my womb to tomb poem. My mother "was true to her culture and nurtured the best she could>" I am humble and grateful that I finally learned the lessons she was trying to teach me. Thanks again.
