Dear Poet,

I see that your muse needed to take a long break...for all of
your outstanding poems to come. Wow, that is a beautiful
photo of your granddaughter and coach. How proud you
must be of her...

Your poem was a pleasure to read...rhymes and flow perfect
as well as the message. This makes for a fantastic entry.

Linda

I am quite familiar with the pressures elite athletes, especially swimmers, go through as they try to make the U. S. Olympic team. Your poem clearly states what these athletes must contend with. Stanza 5 really emphasizes the intangibles that make a difference. A very nice tribute to these ardent athletes.

Yes, to make national levels is still a long way off international, and then to be the top 3? Wow! Each 1/100th second counts.
I admire all of them. I asked my granddaughter recently if she missed her swimming. She said, 'Nan, I miss the highs, but the lows, when I couldn't improve me times, no matter how hard I trained, I don't miss them. I used to get so depressed and angry with myself.' I know at that age, this is such a problem, dealing with the downs. She is much less tired, has more time to study. Thank you for your comments and generous rating to the message in this poem which is close to my heart. Warmest regards.

I looked at the photo and said, "that's Geoff Huegill". The swimming trials are on at the moment, and you're right, only a few will succeed I going. The life of a hopeful athlete is tough, (for parents too) and only a few make it. Good luck for your grandaighter, may she prosper. Great entry in this contest, the abcb rhyming works well, and The articulate, well timed narrative,is metered well, well done, good luck, blessings, Roy

It's a different world away from the pressure, good training for life though?

Thanks Roy, you're obviously a swimming fan? :o)

Oh yeah, my daughters were brilliant swimmers, but turned their attention to netball as a preferred sport, Roy

I have never before given any thought to the rigors that Olympic hopefuls meet; however, when we see matches won and records broken by thousandths-of-a-second differences it has to be obvious that many of these young contenders are relegated to "wannabes" by the same close tolerances. An excellent creation!

Great work you had chance to take everyone to a Olympic event and you delivered.
Most DON'T know what it takes to be a Pro or compete on a high level pressure !!!!
And when it's all over what then keep up the good work PRA4ME

This poem pays tribute to some of the most dedicated youth on the planet. They do give it their all and their parents are supportive as well. It must end up a big disappointment for many of them who aren't chosen.
