Those who can...teach, and there is more than one way do so.
Teaching Language Arts to students of that age would indeed be a challenge.
But, also rewarding as you watched them succeed and become better writers.
Organizing thoughts, and color coding subtopics, are two viable tricks in improved writing skills as you stated.

Rearranging the writing can be difficult. having a second (or 3rd, 4th or 5th ) pair of eyes look at can really help.
Thank you for the 20 years you spent teaching our youngsters.

Hi MaryKelly,
Color coding the research papers is a stroke of genius. I'll bet the kids appreciated that you had found an easy way for them to work together and to organize their assignments. I imagine that it would vastly improve the caliber of their writing and cut down the time they spent writing their papers.
Good job!

Research papers starting in sixth grade now? Is that standard practice now? I taught 9-12th grade. Most hadn't a clue. I like the idea of subdividing a topic and of color coding. I would have tried both of those. I like how you simplified the task with the basics of adding and deleting. This is good advice for those prose writers on FS too.
Thanks for a well-organized read. :-)

What a terrific idea for all of us. My daughter has always struggled with this very same problem - flow and organization. Even in college, she struggled. I enjoyed your essay and can image you were also a joy as a teacher. Well written. No negative or suggestions for improvement.

Mary in my opinion this is a terrific essay that is of great use to all of us. It's an easy enough thing to amass the information, observations and emotions but the much more difficult part is organizing the writing into something cogent. That is the editing process which of course does need to be done even before the proofreading process of writing.
I like this a lot, so many thanks for sharing.

Hi there, it is a great concept to colour code non-fiction but I am not so sure it would work for fiction. I do appreciate that both forms takes some sort of structure but not the same for them both. Very good academic approach for your students. And a very well written essay. All the best. Ulla

Hi there,
I can see the value of this approach for the writing of essays, arguments and paper but find it a stretch to apply it to fiction. Story boarding for example is a very visual way to keep track of story. The organisational requirements for fiction and non-fiction are very different with the topics / sub-division having much more blurred lines in the fictional realm.
A well written and well crafted piece though.

For fiction it's helpful to keep track of the literary elements plot, character, setting, and theme. You are right. Fiction and non fiction have very different approaches. Thank you for the positive comments.

Hi Mary,
Thanks for sharing your expertise with us. Color-coding research notes could certainly be an effective means of organizing non-fiction material, but I'm not sure it would work for fiction. A few weeks ago I was watching a show about William Faulkner and they toured his home, showing the notes he wrote directly on his wall. Lol, no worries about losing those notes, unless there's a fire!
Thanks so much for sharing this.
Be well,
Lana

Thank you for your review and the extra star. The color code in fiction was to help students sort out the literary elements of plot, character, setting, and theme.
