This is great, There is just something about books that are so much more satisfying than a computer screen. Congrats on placing in the poem of the month contest, my friend. You are awesome~Debbie

The little girl then grinned and said, "Oh, Granddad, you are fun.
These books must be so heavy, just a few would weigh a ton!
While I can hold a thousand books here in my tiny hand,
upon my Tablet, and no trees were taken from the land."

Her granddad sighed. "Perhaps you're right, but I like paper best!"
he said, almost defiantly, while puffing out his chest."
...................With all due respect to Grandpa's little pride & joy, I'm afraid I'll have to side with him on this issue, Sandra.
Perhaps it's a generational thing?
To me, there is no comparison between the heft and feel of a book in your hands, to the electronic wizardly and technologies which calls themselves "books" today. Just the smell of an old, well-worn book is intoxicating to me, and that's before I've even cracked it open.

Your poem is impeccably well rhymed, the meter--smooth as silk. We aren't made privy to what transpired to leave the crumbling, dilapidated library in such a sorry state, but that is irrelevant. All one has to do is observe the decline in the sales of actual books, verses how many "books" are downloaded on Kindle Fires alone these days to realize this hypothetical scenario could easily become a reality one day.

Fabulous work, Sandra. Top-notch in every respect.

You and me both, Dean, and I can tell that most of us on here are of 'that age'. But, the way it is going, I do worry it is the what will happen one day. Not in my time though, and hopefully, not in my son's time, but my grandchildren already use a Kindle type at school! Thank you so much for your lovely review, my friend. :) Sandra xx

Jax sent us all a message yesterday that you have dropped out now? I will only write if the picture strikes a cord. There are so many in the group now! xx
reply by Dean Kuch on 01-Mar-2016
I hope not as well, Sandra.
Yeah, unfortunately I had to remove myself from the group. I'm working diligently to get my book out this Halloween (it was supposed to be out last fall), and I have some heavy-duty editing to do.
Take care, and I wish you continued success in the group, and in all of your future endeavors.

Good luck with that. I think it will be a perfect book for Halloween. :) And well done again, on your P0M win, it was really exciting!! I think I did really well coming only 1 vote behind 'The Master'!!! :) Hugs. xx

Sandra, I enjoyed your vision of this picture. I am amazed at the creativity you all have from this one photo. You with your superb writing when it comes to children has certainly written a clear poem.

Good flow and cadence here has made for an enjoyable reading moment. John

Hi, Sandy. I love your interpretation of this picture. Outstanding with lines like this:

"Her granddad sighed. "Perhaps you're right, but I like paper best!"
he said, almost defiantly, while puffing out his chest."

Wonderful all the way through. Bravo! Bob

I am the female version of Granddad, lol! I would hate it if my poem actually happened. I'm glad you enjoyed it, my friend. I hope you are feeling much better now. :) Sandra xx

Hi Sandra, great job on this poem! I could feel the granddad's love for books. Wonderful imagery, rhythm, and rhyme. I like the lines where granddad describes being a cowboy, driving a tank and being a hero.

Oh yes the technology but the message of reading is still delivered.
Very nicely done with the ease of reading and the flow so natural.
Nice story included and a nice piece for the picture

I thought you did a great job with this poem. It's a great image choice for the group. Currently, I've made the technical switch to modern media, but I have to agree, there is a certain kind of romantic nostalgia about books. Perhaps in the next W.War there will be a race to see who can knock out the most satellites from the skies. Suddenly there will be no cell phone coverage, no Amazon books, no Kindle, no tech. Maybe books will make some comeback.

Thank you so much, Nicole. I love that scenario of the WW3, taking potshots at the satellites, lol. I prefer my paper books at the moment and hope we don't lose them for good. If it does happen, I can't see that it would be in my time. (fingers crossed!) Big hugs for the 6 stars, my friend!! I am putting my e-mail address in a PM for you. :) Sandra xxx

You touched my heart with this poem (I would be the grandfather)

In my heart of hearts, I do not believe there will come a time when books
will be replaced by tablets and technology. But I do believe it's possible
that in the name of the trees they may take another leafed form (perhaps
mylar film sheets) and will be more for"bureaucratic preservation" than
everyman's hand. I will mourn the day Libraries go the way of the pigeon
carrier, but assume I will be naught but ashes by then.

Lovely, lovely story told :-)

Deep down, I think we all believe it will, I just hope it doesn't, and all the reviewers I've had on this one, say the same, and like you, hope it won't happen in our time. Thank you so much, my friend, for your really lovely review on my take of the picture. I'm delighted you enjoyed it. :) Sandra. xxx

I liked the message contained within your poem; there is too much emphasis on electronic gadgets these days. All of us need to keep books in print!! Remember when the Nazi's burned all the precious Jewish books? Never to be found again. Of course they didn't have computers then. It is our God-given right to read paperback books, I feel very strongly about this. Our last chance to preserve paper. Thanks for sharing. XX K.

I can't begin to imagine how much ancient history was destroyed by that mad man. It only takes one person to cause so much damage. Yes, we must stand together and protect our paper books!! Thank you so much, my dear friend for this lovely review and for the 6 stars!! ( I am out of 6s already!! ) xsx Sandra xxxxx

Well, I have to agree with Grandpa. I, too, love "paper best."
I like how you have set this scene in the near future. We are not told WHAt happened to the library, but we enjoy the tour through the ruins.
Good use of dialog to push the story along and characterize both the girl and her grandfather.
Stanzas 3 & 4 beautifully depict the joys of reading.
Nicely done!

I haven't had one reviewer side with the granddaughter! LOL. I think we will start a 'Save Our Paper Books Society'! We would surely get loads of support and win! Thank you so much, Rod, for your lovely review. :) Sandra xxx
