Archeology I understand taking on as an interest. And who doesn't enjoy a good bottle of homemade wine, if it is properly aged, uses good fruit stock, and is fermented properly? Combine these two hobbies to habit-forming proportions, and you'll be finding the bones of pink elephants on the plains of the arid planet Modoor in no time flat.

The Nibiru cataclysm is a supposed disastrous encounter between the Earth and a large planetary object (either a collision or a near-miss) which certain groups believe will take place in the early 21st century. Believers in this doomsday event usually refer to this object as Planet 'X' or Nibiru, just as your author's notes stated. With the recent discovery of a Neptune-sized planet which never draws near to our sun, scientists are claiming, based on orbital patterns of planets within our solar system, that this ninth planet, or Planet X, is a very real possibility.
So, having said that, the fact that this well written little sci-fi suspense thriller is listed in the "General Fiction" category, it may not be quite so "fictional" after all.

Well done, and best of luck to you in the contest.

Thanks, Dean, for sharing my story and your additional comments about the Nibiru prophecy. Let's hope this remains fiction.

Hello Author,

Your word count looks to comply with the specifications for the contest, as does the subject matter. With your references in the author's notes I feel like you have researched your subject to lend a flavor of authenticity to your story. Great work there!

I'm thinking maybe we should wait and pay our taxes then? April 15th, you say? :)

It is a good story, sounded plausible given the facts.

Good luck in the contest.

Kim

Thank you so much, Jimmy, for your exuberant praise and those six bright stars. I must admit honing the story to less than 700 words was challenging, but I am delighted you enjoyed the results.

Great story to capture the imagination about this ninth planet which as you quite rightly said has been all over the media. The story holds your attention and your characters are well thought out, a great read and good luck in the the contest.

I loved this story, thank you.

The apocalyptic myth, the new discovery of the ninth planet, and the voice of a prophetic Clemson Henshaw combine to reveal a great piece of flash fiction.

I particularly enjoyed Henshaw's 9-year-old voice, and that of his father - I could imagine a whole novel coming out of that section alone. I like this as a short story - and think it could be developed into a longer piece.

We can probably expect a whole raft of stories in the press as 15 April approaches...I prefer to keep it as science fiction.

Thank you for a great story; good luck with the competition.

Wow! I am thrilled you liked this flash-fiction story so much. Indeed, it was fun to write. Yes, I found myself wishing I wasn't restricted by a word count as I would like to have extended every scene. Thanks so much, Irene, for your exceptional praise and all of thos bright stars.

That's a little scary. If you watch Ancient Aliens, aren't they supposed to come from Nibiru? But my theory is that mankind will be responsible for its own demise. The Earth will survive. Good luck in the contest.

Hi there,

This was a very well written piece for this tired old prompt. Based loosely on current facts, it does help to bring an air of believability to the proceedings. Good tone and tension throughout. The apocalypse is the driving force of the plot but doesn't feature. this is clever.

Is this plant any danger to Earth? - planet.
