We're having a mild winter here in Calgary this year. Though, it's far from over so we could still get a few snow storms.

I'm confused who is winter's better haf. Is it the wind? Or is it the people building ice castles? I'm slow and just don't get it.

Thank you Joy for your encouaging review. It was just a fun piece personifying winter...so maybe..."old man Winter had a wife" - his better half.

-Very good artwork.
-Good use of rhyme and imagery in the poem.
-I really like this poem with the personification and the lighthearted nature of it.
-The poem opens with great imagery and alliteration:
"He blusters, blows and has his way
With slush and sleet and freezing rain."
-I really like the last line--very catchy!

You have fun very well
in this nicely rhymed poem
with excellent tetrameter
Old Woman Winter has better alliteration
and, I daresay, would be much kinder than Old Man Winter
who seems to be a grouch most of the time
You must be in the mountains of the Carolinas
if you have snow drifts and ice castles
Excellent picture to match poem
Well done

The rhyme and flow were great. I enjoyed the visibility you have portrayed with your words. Winter is fun and I have enjoyed it. I am ready go "His better half " though. God bless.

Thank you for sharing. I thought the poem was delightful. For a moment I thought you were talking about the weatherman, so when I read the last two verses, I LOL. You are so right, winter gets to be way to long in Minnesota too. Kat

This is lovely. You have painted a joyful picture of winter. Diamond dust is a wonderful description of snow. I was not expecting the ending. Well done.

I love this poem. I would love there to be a Mrs Winter or old lady winter lol. Maybe that's where the saying,' as cold as ice comes from lol. This is a great poem and thank you for posting.

An amusing piece of personification that revieals its identity, to those of us that haven't guessed at it, in the final line.

It seemed like a simple personification of winter itself until this hint is dropped:

"For better or for worse, I go
To smooth his snowdrifts on the lawn.
I build ice castles by the lake
And sprinkle diamond dust 'til dawn."

Ah, he's just as untidy as any of us men. The poor wife has to tidy up after him. I bet she wonders why he has to leave his snow drifts lying about so untidily that she has to be smoothing them out al the time.

Great fun this; I thoroughly enjoyed it.

I enjoyed this witty perspective upon winter. The poem works because of the personification of winter as a grumpy spouse: an imaginative reversal of the cliche presentation of the season! I also liked the idea of the beauty of winter scenes being a product of the Winter's 'better half' ! The last line comes as a pleasant surprise. Well done and thanks for sharing this with us. Nigel.

We might as well have fun with winter. It will eventually leave.
I like seeing snow if I can stay inside. It is lovely. As a kid I
enjoyed it more with throwing of snowballs. Nice job of rhyming
quatrains.
