The biggest take away from this work is, there have been times when the Academy of Arts Sciences have been very fair. When two African American actors win best actor for male and female in the same year, you can hardly call the organization that allowed that racist. What we have to guard against is those members trying to reverse the clock and go back to the time when blacks were hardly ever nominated for anything. That is our biggest challenge, no turning back the clock on diversity.

Good rhyming couplets throughout nomi writing about the recent never-ending grumbling about the lack of diversity in Oscar nominations. Not enough black actors are being nominated. I did not realise that nominations depended on the colour of one's skin. It is supposed to be for the best actors. If an actor is worthy, black or white, he will be nominated. I like your piece very much and your author notes - I agree entirely. Warm regards Dorothy

Thank you so much, Dorothy. There is much to be unhappy about in the process that determines nominations. As an honest person I am forced to admit that there is no organized system that denies black recognition. Especially when you realize that in recent times there have been many black winners of acting Oscars. Yet it hurts when some of the acknowledged movies of note are movies starring black actors and not one is able to garner a nomination. This makes you wonder how. The white writers of "Straight Outta Compton" get nominated and that is fine, but without the skillful job done by the actors the movie would have sank dismally. This movie won accolades, but the only people worthy of notice were only the white participants. Suspicious, don't you think?

Hi nomi - There are some good black actors who are also highly regarded and have won Oscars -
Sydney Poitier - Lilies o the Field
Denzel Washington - Training Day
Forest Whitaker - The Last Kind of Scotland
Halle Berry - Monster's Ball
Morgan Freeman - Million Dollar Baby
That's only a few I remember - and loads have been nominated over the years.
People just like to grouse about something or other. LOL.
If an actor is good enough, regardless of the colour of his skin, he will be nominated.

You would certainly think so, and the recent past is a pretty good indicator of that. Yet the past has also taught us that there will always be someone looking to back to yesterday so maybe diligence should not be abandoned too soon.

Like how you tell those who nominated the actors that you are making lemon aid, so to speak, out of their lemons. Yes, black actors are phenomenal and getting rich in the process.

The big take away from my poem should be that despite the lack of recognition, black folks are getting paid, gaining experience and developing a professional portfolio. Thank you for your great comments.

Thank you for your generous offer, but I do not think that I will be able to accept your offer at this time. As I fear that there would be too much of a disagreement between us.

Hi Nolan,
;)
I can only imagine, because I don't know. First off, I'm not an actress... secondly, I'm not a minority. So to sit here and say, Oh...I 'get' it... I don't. Oh sure, I'm empathetic... I am. And there is a very large part of me that just doesn't 'get' that we can't all (like Rodney King said, )'just get along'... that being said... I've no idea why we can't. *throws hands up*
I can... but there just always seems to be SOMETHING making someone want to throw a mirror up and say, "Hey! Look! We are NOT alike! And since *whoever this and whoever that* didn't get this or that award, then it MUST be racial.
That being said... (and you KNOW I loves you) ;)
Your poem is amazing (as are you) and it says volumes, and says it well, I might add. If I had one of those stupid sixes, I'd give you one of those stupid sixes, but since I don't, how about I just give you my undying love (which HAS to be worth more than one of those stupid sixes anyway, right? :)
and, by the way, appears to love all spectrums of 'color' ;)
Love you, sweet Nolan. (and your work)
Mwah
Keep rockin' it!

And I love you right back you gorgeous devil. Please be assured that I am not on a soap box about this issue. Like most people of color I have had racial incidents that upset me, but I attributed to the person not any group. And you see that really is the crux of the problem, instead of saying wow this person is not ver enlightened, we all to often say those people are rotten to us. No that person was rotten to you. deal with that. I love you and I appreciate you ongoing support and please never forget that no matter what the world may think you will reside in my heart front and center forever.
-
Oh believe me, I know that. ;) And there are rotten people of all size, shape, and yes... color. It's very true... one cannot judge the book by it's cover. ;)
Love you right back, my dear Mr. Miller. ;) (with no apologies, just thankfulness, to Miz Miller, of course. ;) ) mwah!

It's amazing that the Oscars have been awarded 88 years now and only three people of color have won. Hattie McDaniel, Sidney Potier, Denzel Washington. If that's not racism, I don't know what is. I wish had a six for you.
Have a great day and God bless.

Thank you for your generous support. However, there have been a few more people of color who have won Oscars for acting, Jamie Foxx, Hallie Berry, Jennifer Hudson, Morgan Freeman, Forrest Whittaker, Lupita Noyongo, and a few others as well. The big problem is not so much of winning the award, there have been few nominations. We well know that there will be years when no African American will win, but to have our work totally ignored now that is a problem.

Very good a and well written lots of good rhyme great read and tells a great story and message. when it comes to the Oscars what blacks don't understand is there are 1000 white actors to every 1 black. It's impossible to pick a black every year. we don't personally hold "white" awards like the blacks do. have a great day.

I must admit I couldn't give a damne about oscars and Emmys and all that crap. I never watch the the award shows as, frankly, they bore the pants off me. But I suppose you have a point here if black actors etc are not getting their fair share of recognition.
There was a time a long time ago, in what we call the dark ages when the Romano Celts in Britain, mostly little dark haired people tried to get rid of the big blond guys called Vikings and Saxons, mostly blond and blue-eyed. Nowadays no one gives a damne about hair or eye colour. And when, in a few hundred years we are all coffee coloured, no one will give a damn about skin colour either.
It's only about 150 years since the American Civil War for heavens sake. Be patient, man. The dark Ages were1300 years ago. Lol.

Thank you my friend. As a writer I express many sentiments, but I mainly try to write on issues that affect diverse readers, the elections, car chases, robberies, infidelity, you name it. Not every post express my own feelings, thoughts or desires.

Jackie Robinson proved the Black man could play White man's baseball. There are many blacks that have proved their talent in the different fields of entertainment. This is very well written.

Thank you Charlie. As a writer I want to address whatever is of interest to my hoped for readers. I dare not feed them a steady diet of pablum, lest they grow bored and never want to read me again. I know that some of my readers will be upset with this post, my reaction is good.

One should never have to apologize for their posts. We all should be adults on the site and followers of Voltaire.
