My wife and I are cat lovers. Our daughter has a Lab which we walk a lot on the bike path in front of our house. My wife is gradually growing fonder of the dog (she won't admit it) but cats are her first love. I love this story of yours and am going to send the link to her. She will love it too and applaud your kind efforts for the cats and dogs. Did you know the Lord says in the Bible that evil people do not care for their animals? So your own observations are confirmed. Sorry I don't have a sixer, as I found your story very interesting and well written. God bless you and your husband. Dennis

Thank you very much. There are so many people, like you, who love and care for their animals. This story got so many comments from animal lovers. It does make me so angry when I find another abandoned animal; dog or cat. I can't save them all but I wish I could..

As a former cat owner, I agree with every sentence in this post. You've educated a lot of people about farm and animals. As a city person, I've assumed all farms welcome cats; nature's mouse hunters, but I see that I was mistaken.

If more people had your sense and kindness, the throw away population would be cut in half. Thanks for posting this.

Thank you. Yes, most farms are over -run with cats and most farmers could care less what becomes of them. The farmer wants the cats for rodent control but very few even feed the cats. There are some who take good care of them but, as I said, they are few and far between.

This was a lovely story. You must've felt blessed to have these animals for so long. I felt bad for the two gray kittens and the puppy, but I smiled when I read the part about the squirrel and how they entertained themselves with it. :) I hope you write more in the future. :)

Thank you. Someday I intend to write the story about each cat we have. Each one has a story of neglect and abuse to tell.

Oh, this post both broke my heart and heald it at the same time. Awful thatthere are people who treatcreatures like this. Great that people like you take care of them. We have a rescue cat (just the one, we've only a tiny house, and anyway the landlady said we can only have one.) He was three when we got him from the rescue place. Obviously not feral, but had been found in a terrible state. Because we live in a place where lots of people come and work for the summer, many get a cat and leave it when they leave their job. How they could do thatis beyond me.

Excellent write on this subject.

Thank you. I agree, I don't understand how people can leave an animal to starve then go home and eat a good meal in a warm house. It's beyond me.

Hi, Prettybluebirds. We have read each other before and this story touched a very alive nerve. I have had cats all my adult life and two dogs. First they were all-sorts just as long they had four legs and said meow that was okay with me. After a few years my husband advised me to get pedigreed cats and I started showing and selective breeding. We had our last old gentleman for twenty-one years. He died in my arms last year. We won't get another as the parting after so long is too hard., Regards Mabaker.

Thank you. I understand how you feel. I raised a kitten on the bottle after her mother was killed. She lived to be twenty and I had to put her down two years ago. It is very hard.

First, let me say I love the picture of you on your horse. It looks like an Appaloosa. My wife own 2 Quarter Horses that we ride mostly for Pleasure and an occasional showing event. Since we live on a small "farm" your story resonates with me. Not only cats and dogs, we've even had an abandoned pig try to move in. It saw our horses and thought it was home as its former owners kept it around their horses. But they abandoned poor creature when they moved :(
It breaks my heart as well, to see any of God's creatures inhumanely treated. Our cat was born in our hay barn and we've adopted a dog from the animal shelter. It brings me to tears when I see any abused or mistreated animal --- especially horses. How can people be so heartless. Okay, I'm off my soapbox. Loved your story and the way you present it. It reveals a good-hearted soul behind the words and pen. Loren

Thank you. Carmen is the horse in my picture. She was in deplorable condition when I found her. I used her for a parade horse for many years as she was fearless so all the noise and people didn't bother her. It did take a while to win her trust because of the abuse she had suffered. I'm happy to learn there are good people like you out there. Thank you very much for the six stars. The Boys deserve them whether I do or not.

Hi there,

'I wasn't too surprised when my husband walked into the house and handed me a small gray kitten. He was probably around four months old.' - isn't that a bit young to be married? lol

Seriously though, I don't understand this mentality towards animals. We always had dogs and they were always rescued ones. Such a state some of them were in.

Good piece and best of luck in the contest.

Thank you. LOL! I hope most people didn't read that line like you did. Maybe I should add The Kitten to the beginning of that sentence you think?

I so love this artist and another amazing picture as it that you wrote. I'm so happy to know, although you feel like the drop off point, that it says so much, the way you write, the stories being left at hour farm, amazing. I bet you have a million great stories. Please write them for us...

Thank you. Yes, I do have a million stories. I intend to write the story about each one of my cats eventually. They all have a story to tell of their life before they came to us.

A powerfully written informative rant. I agree wholeheartedly. Animals are blessing to our lives and the real monster are humans. Well done.

I am a firm believer in adoption and have gotten two of my cats from the shelter. I encourage my friends to do the same or donate when possible. The SPCA will spay and give them their shots for a low price. Thanks for sharing this and for your passion in the matter.
