My goodness, the drama continues. You peaked my curiosity this the ending of this one. Did you ever lean more about the why she committed suicide... of course most of the time the survivors don't really know why.

All I know is what I heard from Mom. I'm sure if Dad had still been alive at the time, he wouldn't care to discuss. He was a very emotional person.

Every family has its skeletons, those things we hate to admit until years later. That separation from her family at such a tender age does seem to have has a big impact for your sister.

Great hook at the end to make the reader want more. Fortunately, I am behind so I can go straight to the nest chapter without waiting.

I'm flattered that you're catching up. You can avoid reading the background material and get right into the chapter. Thanks again for your comments.

Hmm. I wonder what really happened. For most people, memories aren't recalled before the age of four. I doubt your sister remember those events but I do not doubt that the resentment and feelings of rejection were felt. Barb probably had no understanding at the time of your mother's reasons for sending your aunt.

Your sister an your father a very close relationship. I have heard of sibling in the distant past being unusually close but without the implication of incest. Was their closeness noticeable to you? You didn't see you aunt much so maybe not...

Was your mother stigmatized for being a divorcee? I know that in those days divorce wasn't as common as it is now.

It is interesting discovering how members of a family feel about other members. It is said family are made of the people you wouldn't otherwise associate with if you have a choice.

Suicide is always ugly. Some say it is most selfish of acts. Hard to say.

More revealed in this expose but more questions arise and those questions are not likely to be answered...

I only knew Dad and his sister were close by the stories Mom told me. Apparently, she tried to come between them several times. Wish I had queried Mom more about that. Yes, divorce carried a stigma. Worse, Mom had a child. Watertown highbrow society looked down upon her. At least, that's how she felt.

There is much drama in your family, the suicide is a shock. One wonders about the underpants situation, children should not be laughed at. Your story brings out the various issues that individuals do not talk about.

I would hope if I ever were to publish this, it would encourage others to process the events that made a mark on them.

I like your honesty in admitting that you can't remember every single thing from your younger days. Barb's comment "I don't recall anything like that. I just remember that, except for playing with the kitten, I wanted to go home." sums up the recollection acurately without any embellishment. I'm pleased you were able to share so much before your sister's death. I'm sure it gave you both a lot of comfort.

Sad...that would be extremely shocking news to find out. Family secrets are like wounds that barely heal at times. No one wants the wounds to heal so they are left as itchy scars and upon scratching them...they open up and bleed because truly healing has never occurred. Great story.

The flood gates have opened and maybe it's for the best. It's a shame a tragedy, like sickness, gives people a window to tell and listen to hard truths. I can feel that this conversation was not only good for Barb, but you as well.

Oh, that's sad. Jeanne committed suicide and it was kept a big secret from some. I am curious to know what the family speculated the cause was. Pants falling down for a child would be embarrassing and then hurtful if it kept happening.

Oh well, at least they didn't film it. Today's parents would probably send it to reality TV as in the show The Funniest Video.

Jeanne was a poor choice to keep a toddler, as she had no kids of her own and was clueless as to their feelings and needs. Too bad Barb never sought counseling years before. It wouild have helped her get past the old resentments.

For sure. I'm sure she would scoff at the idea of therapy.
Guess what! I now rank #3 in novels. Whoopee. But then, I went from 16 to 60 in poems. Have to keep it up. Glad it's just for fun. :-)

Wow, Shari this is quite the story. The part about the panties seems most telling. You are telling it like is in this chapter, and it's riveting.

sister-in-law as a jealous woman who didn't want to share her beloved brother with a divorcee who had no social status. The source of much trouble in families.

Excellent all the way.
