Well, speaking all those languages certainly hasn't slowed you down. Your prose is very smooth, logical and is generally correctly written. This is a good example. The secret is the reading, a pursuit you allude to throughout your essay. I wish I was a more voracious reader. I'd be a much better writer if I was at the books more regularly. I really enjoyed this and I wish you well with your competition.
One suggestion:
whenever I could find the time...should be 'can find the time' as your sentence fragment applies this is in present tense.

Hello Ulla,
A lovely and inspiring piece of 'Essay Non-Fiction' transparently depicting its theme!
Wording is simple as well as impressive.
Spontaneous and enchanting flow from the beginning to the end.
The most striking lines are:
.........."So, here I am writing, and it appears that I have a lot to tell. My brain is overflowing, with projects and ideas. Some of it has found an outlet, and a lot is stored somewhere deep in my head."
Let the beautiful aspects of your brain come out. Keep it up & Best of Luck!

You are fortunate to be multi-lingual. It enhances your writing and
your imagination. I always enjoy your pieces. My wife and I were
in Barcelona this last September and we can hardly wait to go
back. What a beautiful city and wonderful people! -Bill

Thank you so much and for your support. Yeah, Barcelona is a beautiful city. We live some five hundred kilometers south of there in a beautiful valley with a view to the sea and the surrounding mountains. All the best. Ulla

I love the insights into the psychological basis for why you write, Ulla. I really could relate to a lot of what you've expressed in this excellent contest entry.

Good luck!

:) Bev

Well, I enjoyed what you wrote here. I was like you, always reading when I shouldn't have been, and always caught out. I think you have told your reasons why you are writing, very well. Most writers read a lot, we seem to have a hunger for the written word. I am sure you will be a published writer and read in many people's homes one day. Good luck in the contest. xsx Sandra

I think reading a lot in your younger years is something you'll have in common with most writers. Your story sounds so similar to mine. You're doing a great job here on this site. So why not call yourself a writer? It's what you are. :)

Tessa thank you so much. You are right I should call myself a writer but then again the question begs: Am I? I would like to believe so. Thanks a lot for your encouragement. All best. Ulla

Dear Ulla,
You are a writer! I always enjoy reading
your work. English is your second language, so is
mine. I very seldom write prose, poetry was my love
since I was little girl, while other girls were reading
comic books, I was reading poetry. By the time I was
fifteen years old I had read most of the Spanish classics.
That I'm a writer? I don't think so. I wrote a poetry book
ten years ago, does this makes me a writer?
I've been reading your work and your writing is excellent,
It's entertaining and fun to read. I'm always waiting for
the next work. This is a sign of a good writer.

Your English is surprisingly good. I never would have guessed it's your second language if you hadn't mentioned it. I hope you get the chance to publish some day. It feels fantastic to hold your book in your hands knowing you created it and every word inside. Good luck in the contest!

I read your explanation of why you write and found that your reason is similar to mine. I have no formal education nor another language other then English.

Back in the late 70', my ex-wife and I hung out with friends on the weekends. I used to write down words that intrigued me. Words my friends spoke. I would take these words and create poetry and short stories with them. My ex-wife called me stupid and that I embarrassed her. Well in 2008, I joined Fanstory to see if I was stupid. I found that others enjoyed my poems and gave me help. I wrote from the heart for my satisfaction. I had over time entered 7 international contests. I won 6 times and placed 3rd in the other contest.

I write to help cleanse my mind, heart and soul, but mainly, I write to help and inspire those that are hurting in some way with depression or disease.

I really like this story and why you write. I apologize for my ranting of s sorts. Good luck in all you do and bless you,,,,,Jim

I thought you put across your feelings about writing very clearly. Incidentally, I think one would have to go a very long way to find a writer who didn't want to publish. 'Too much effort', or 'pointless waste of time' perhaps. But not 'don't want'.

(Square brackets indicate suggested deletions, and asterisks, suggested insertions):

'[Then again] *But then*, when I did get started'

'So why don't I write in Spanish you may ask. Well, the answer is the same, as to why I don't write in Danish, the language I was brought up with' (But, you haven't given us the answer to the Spanish/Danish question).

Good luck with the contest.

Adrian , thank you so much for this. I have corrected as of now. Why I don't write in Danish or Spanish is because English seems to be more natural to me which I did say in my essay. Thanks again for useful review. All the best. Ulla
