I've never understood why God was so harsh with Moses and denied him entry into the Promised Land for simply striking a stone with his staff and causing water to come forth to sate the thirst of his people, Dennis. After all Moses did for the children of Israel through God, it seemed such a harsh, cruel punishment. It also makes me wonder as a believer if I will be denied entry for some of my past transgressions.

I've asked my pastor about this and he said it was because once again, Moses lacked true faith in God to give the people what they needed, and that Moses was unrepentant.

What's your take on the situation?

Good writing as usual, my brother.

~Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you & yours!

The Rock represents Christ. 1 Corinthians 10:4 (NIV): "and drank the same spiritual drink; for they drank from the spiritual rock that accompanied them, and that rock was Christ".

In the first encounter with the Rock, Moses was told to strike it...he did, and life giving water came out of the Rock and satisfied the thirst of the people. This striking of the Rock represents Christ being struck by God on Calvary (atonement) which allowed the Holy Spirit to be poured out to save us all, not just from Hell, but also from the dangers of the spiritual desert of this world.
The second striking of the Rock was in direct disobedience to the command to simply "speak to the Rock". This speaking represents prayer which among other lesser blessings, releases the power of God to us through the Spirit. We are made worthy to be heard and to have the Holy Spirit with us because of the cross (the initial striking of the Rock).

The sacrificial aspect of Christ's work is completed, and never to be repeated. In light of this, we should understand that Moses acted in unbelief in striking the Rock again. This was a rash impatient act, seemingly brought on by his anger at the wayward people and by extension, the God who had "failed" him.

Why so harsh a punishment....unable to enter the Promised Land after all these years? The principal is this...unto whom much is given, much is required. Moses had often been in God's Presence. He knew God and he should have (on the basis of his previous experience and knowledge of God) simply obeyed God and trusted Him even in the time of great pressure from wayward, sinful people.

Notice too, how Moses accepts his correction from the Lord! He is compliant and continues to serve Him, and is a wonderful help to the man who would take his place in entering the Promised Land, Joshua.A lesson for us all to not turn bitter against God when we are reproved by Him for out unbelieving actions.

One last note of an allegorical nature: the Promised Land does not represent Heaven but rather victory in the Christian life, since it is the place where opposition must be overcome by the help of God's Spirit. Looking at it that way for a moment, let us contemplate that the Law (represented by Moses) cannot bring victory, only death and defeat.

Joshua (another name for Jesus) because He (Jesus) is alive and thus can lead us believers into victory over sin and death. We, like Moses, are responsible before God in how we use the knowledge He has given us. Let us speak to the ever-living Rock and pray for the life giving living water of the Spirit to satisfy our thirst for God.

God bless you my dear brother Dean, Dennis

Thank you very much for that detailed explanation, Dennis. I understand now much more clearly why God did what He did to Moses.

I sincerely appreciate you taking the time to explain this to me.

    Your brother in Christ.

This is a well written piece about the story of God's chosen people and how God delivered them from slavery. I like how you used this story as well as the verses from Psalms and John 3 as evangelizing tools, which could be made into tracts and distributed wherever. Great job on this.
Blessings,
Anabella

This is a strong statement to the power of God and the belief that Jesus, our savior died for our sins. It has taken me a long time to understand and to ask for my Heavenly Father's forgiveness. Jesus has forgiven me. I have faith in my Lord.

I enjoyed the true story you told and the Author's Notes. This is a wonderful tribute to our Almighty God. Thank you for sharing it. Best wishes for the Christmas holidays.

Always with respect,

Well done Dennis, I find it tough when even Christians question the goodness of God, they say they've "trusted" God but He doesn't answer them. How can they question God's goodness when He suffered the most obscene death one can imagine? Well done, bro these words you've written carry power, I might doubt the love of men, but God, never. Well written, I get taunted by a few reviewers, that think, they're clever, I tell them I've been to Egypt why would I want to ga back? Blessings dear bro, Roy

Thank you Roy, brother. Perhaps the doubters are not yet seasoned in their faith, but God is able to mature us even as He was able to beget us through the word. God bless you, my dear brother, Dennis

I like this essay. It is touching. It afforded me, reader, to once again review historical views on the history of Egypt and Israel and biblical passages. It was well written. I love reading the essay from beginning to end. Congratulations for sharing. Dom

Denny, your review of God's role in the captivity of the Israelites
as well as the Psalmist's comforting words to his people is
exemplary. I was distracted by your message when you started
putting in verse numbers. I would recommend those be removed.
Also, a couple of spags.
I think Pharoe is spelled Pharaoh.
There should be a space between the and Lord in the Exodus quotation.
