As I always say, you are the ultimate Emperor of the horror genre and nobody can take way that crown. But I have to be honest, I like the more subtle Dean as you have written a poem inspired by royowens in which you excelled too. Thanks for sharing.

I'm a bit of an anomaly where my writing is concerned, Susan. Even I can't remain in the dark all of the time. It just isn't in my nature to do so. Still, my passion for writing lies with the horror genre, but my convictions, faith and spirituality and love of God supersedes even my own passions.
Any talents were are given come from God, as the Devil can create nothing. He is an equal opportunity destroyer. So in reality, even my darker works are gifts from God. If I have any true gifts for writing at all, it is God who grants them.
Thanks so much for taking the time to read and review my latest Tiny Tale of Terror. I sincerely appreciate it!

This is a great one, Dean. I love the author notes. They have me rolling on the floor. Might be time for me to work on another creepy horror story. Take care, my friend~Debbie

Is this the only way to get to his friend's house? In order for me to suspend belief, you'd have to add something like "Still he couldn't risk traffic on the main road. Monster trucks could crush his small bike. His own ten year old body would be roadkill."

Also, where did the pitchfork come from? Did the scarecrow hold one? Or do we read between the lines to see a serial killer repositioning the scarecrow and replacing it?

Aside from these two questions, the terse sentences where every word counts makes this a gore for gore's sake story.
King does the same thing now and again. :-)

And where did the pitchfork come from?

Many scarecrows have pitchforks either leaning near their posts, stuck in the ground near them, or wired directly to the post they're mounted on, at least in my neck-of-the-woods, Shari. I assume mine was just such a scarecrow. Besides, if a scarecrow can make itself come alive, do you really think it would have much difficulty making a pitchfork appear? Illusionist Cris Angel makes things appear out of thin air, and he's human...I think, lol.

As for the shortcut, some things in flash fiction must be left to speculation for the sake of brevity. You're forced to choose to include what you feel is important, and what you think is not. Let's face it, the majority of kids today are lazy and will risk life and limb to make things easier on themselves. And if you live way out in the country as I do, sometimes one way is the only way to get from point A to point be, and you take your chances.

Jeez Louise, this scared the daylights out of me, Dean. I really don't like scarecrows, and now I have the horrible picture of poor crucified Timmy in my head! As always, you deliver the horror in spades, my friend.

I'm really challenged by short flash, Dean, to be honest. I don't think I'd do anything nearly as good as you can. But I'll think about it.

Thanks for considering it, Bev. Look at it as a way to say a lot with very few words. It also helps you when you write longer stories to omit the unnecessary.

Stupid little Timmy. Why does he continue to use the path through the cornfields? Clearly, he deserved what he got. My only question--where's the scarecrow? I hope he doesn't work his way up to Michigan!

Well done, Dean. You're always entertaining.

Hahaha, I hope not either, Green Lake Girl. I live in southern Ohio myself, and Michigan is much too close!

This is a good scary scare-crow tale Dean. A very frightening paddock of corn that Timmy should well have stayed out of. Like the way you carry the scary stuff through to your notes.

I am scared of scarecrows myself. I have no idea why and don't know if I have ever actually seen one but the thought scares me. This was a creepy winner. Gretchen

Well this certainly is filled with terror. Good job on the genre. Your story is short enough to make the point without belaboring the gore. Good job with the artwork. I see no changes. Good job and thanks for sharing [I think]. [only kidding]. You have a great knack for this genre--your grandfather would be/is proud.

Hahaha, yes, I have, Barb. As long as I keep taking my medication to make the voices in my head stop talking to me, I'm just fine and no one is any real immediate danger. At least I don't think they are...

SHUT UP, BE QUIET! CAN'T YOU SEE I AM SPEAKING TO BARB HERE!??! So sorry about that, heh-heh...

Now, where were we before we were so RUDELY interrupted? Oh yeah...I think you're referring to a TV movie titled Dark Night of the Scarecrow, which was released around 1981 or so. I have a copy of it, and I'll provide it for you here so you can be scared while watching it as much as you'd like.

How's THAT for a thank you, huh, Barb?
    Don't mention it...

    Heh-heh...

You know you did not have to really remind me but I am glad to know you knew what I was referring to. You know? Of corse you do. the voices told you so.
