We even have those birds here in Missouri. They are always around the creeks and rivers here, too. I like your poem describing a sighting of one of these pretty colored birds. It is smooth and has no awkward phrasing.

This had a real free flow to it. An in the moment poem, is what I call this form because it just seems a natural expression of what you feel, see, touch, hear or taste.

Cape Cod Canal - You have it in your poem, "Cape cod Canal." This is very well written with a smooth flow of words, making for a very good read.

I have never saw one before and your poem speaks truth I am sure though a picture is worth a thousand words seeing this beautiful fowl specimen in person would be a delight. All the best and God Bless

We don't get the blue ones here just the common or garden grey ones, but even they are creatures of beauty and expert fishers. There's only one problem though - the fish are beautiful too:

"GLORY be to God for dappled things--
For skies of couple-colour as a brinded cow;
For rose-moles all in stipple upon trout that swim..."
Gerard Manley Hopkins - Pied beauty.

And the heron eats them.
And so do we.

Squaring this particular circle is a problem, do you not think?

This is a lovely tribute to the great blue heron. The picture and the poem match well and I appreciated you including the illustration. My favorite image from your poem:

ambles over sea
worn rocks
searching for more lunch

Great job!

Isn't it a gorgeous bird! I'm not surprised, you call her nature's gift of beauty.
I like how you describe the bird ambling over sea worn rocks. Very nice. :)

You make the rotten koi thieves sound so serene and harmless, mermaids. We have one who's gonna get his neck tied in a knot if he doesn't leave my fish alone. And does he eat the small ones?
No-o! He waits till they're eight or ten inches long. Mind you, the pond is right by a well-stocked lake...

Great job, by the way.
:D Nancy

They are icons of the shoreline. They command your attention with their regal poise while on the hunt. This is a well said description of how they impact one's life and memories. My memory is with my children who saw one come in for a landing in the marsh behind our house, and the ran inside and told me a pterodactyl had flown in. Lol.Thank you for sharing
