This is a great article, and words of wisdom that I wish many more could read. I feel much the same way about this, and I am saddened to see the closures to these establishments. I have never been to sea world, but I have always wanted to go. I have friends who have and one of them ended up going to school for marine biology. He lives in Australia now. One of my friends daughters was introduced to our wildlife preserves here in Louisiana, she is now in college studying environments and birds so that she can come back and help save our wetlands. these types of establishments are vital to spark the imagination of future generations. Activist mean well, but in truth they often cause more harm than good. they become so single minded that they can not see the whole picture.

Thank you, Trish, for your thoughtful comments. Yes, places like SeaWorld can and do trigger life-long interests in kids, and that should not be discarded. When things go out of sight, they always go out of mind too.

Hi Nicole:)
I agree with you that the SeaWorlds and similar marine exhibition are quite educations are a wonderful educational experience. In fact when I visited a center in San Diego, it influenced me to spend tho years earning a Master's degree in marine biology.

The problem that troubles environmentalists (and I consider myself one) is that in the case of killer whales, they are often confined in pools that are barely large enough for the room to turn around and free swimming is impossible. This often create heath problems. I suggest that the solution is to build exhibition halls by ocean inlets that can be fenced off to provide large, deep swimming areas.

Dolphins and some species of seals are quite comfortable in the SeaWorld environment. When well cared for they seem quite happy and readily reproduce.

In the case of animals like snow leopards and Bengal tigers that are so close to extinction that their only hope is to be protected in zoos or on animal farms

Great article, but you need too study both sides of such issues.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Roger. Having sections of sea enclosed for viewing might work on both sides. Sadly, it seems as if the activists have won. The whales were the draw card. The way I understand it, SeaWorld is scheduled to close in 2 yrs time. It is the end. Out of sight, out of mind.
    Yours sincerely

Hi Nicole,

Lots of food for thought. In Marine Land, Canada there were allegations of neglect and cruelty some years back. The sea animals were in a pathetic state of neglect, apparently.

Have a great week.

Hi, Nicole

_ Definitely both sides of the fence in this issue for sure.
_ I like to think I see both of those sides.
_ People that work with these deadly mammals do so knowing they can become bait at any time--yet the do if for the love of them.
_ Quite admirable.
_ Still don't know if is right to keep animals in captivity either.
_ So, not only do I see both sides, I =sit= on both sides as well. (*>*)

_ Fantastic weekend!
_ Exhausted, but wouldn't trade it for anything.

Cheers & Blessings

I had no idea 'Sea world' was under threat. On my visits to the States in the past, it was my favourite destination, as it was for my husband and kids. I did organise a holiday in Cyprus for me and my son twenty years ago, but only so he could spend half an hour swimming with a family of dolphins. I had promised this treat if he improved at school, and when he did, I couldn't renege on the deal! One of the best experiences of my life, and well worth the cost!

Yes, shows have been stopped, and it seems that it is due to close in about 2 yrs time.
I also took my kids there. One son swam with sharks, the other with dolphins.
It is the only time in my life that I (all of us) have had such close encounters with that sort of sea life--such an awesome, worthwhile experience.

A well constructed persuasive essay. I love the part about the safety of the sea. Brought to mind the oil spills too.
For sure, children will never see marine life except in this safe enviroment. Too bad the whales can't vote.

Nicole, I couldn't agree with you more. I'm an animal lover if anybody is, but there is a time and a place for everything. This political correctness is just taking over. I can't believe that Sea world has been closed. I have been to many shows with my daughter when she was a child. We loved it. I don't know what to say. All best. Ulla

The only seaworld (Aqua-Marine) I've been too - several
times, is in Portugal - oh, and one in Melbourne - and were
experiences I'll never forget - viewing these amazing creatures up close - such a privilege, I think.

I can't understand why these so-called do-gooders would
want to close down such places, as the animals and sea-life
there are usually secure and well-cared for.
