What you have written has merit. The little things are the key things in life. As you so wrote -

"My point is --and it has certainly taken me a while to get to it -- It's the little things in life that make me happy. It's a hot cup of coffee on the back porch; the sound of a thunderstorm at night; children laughing; a birthday card from an old friend; a cardinal on my birdfeeder, my husband unexpectedly bringing flowers to me; a good steak and a glass of wine; and sometimes just reliving an old and pleasant memory."

In our path of life, we have moments to stop and smell the roses. Some florists sell roses without the bloom so you will appreciate the flowers. Know in the storms you can dance with Father. Send praise up and God sends blessings down. I like your story about the girl who had anxieties and worry. Your mother is wise. She changed your atmosphere in a loving way. Have a blessed Christmas! flylikeaneagle

Very nice. I make a gratitude list...sounds like your mom had this idea long ago. Very smart. Well written and fun the way you present it. I wanted to keep reading. Thanks for sharing. Good luck in the contest.

I got so caught up in your descriptions of childhood pleasures so different from mine--no calf in sight in the suburbs:)
Gratitude lists never get old, and have the power to shift our focus, and indeed make the day better.
So glad I read this.

This is wonderfully and beautifully written! I am a long-time sufferer of depression, and happiness is often something I must search for like a ship at sea looking for the beacon. Your story made me, well, happy because you make happiness seem so attainable, so simple. You make me want to search under smaller rocks instead of lifting so hard to find it in such impossible places. Thank you for this marvelous story full of hope, joy, and perseverance. It has my vote!

WOW! What a wonderful review and kind response! I am so pleased that my essay touched you and you were kind enough to share your thoughts with me. Although I do not suffer from clinical depression, I find myself mentally dragging out my Big Chief Tablet any time the going gets a little rough. I love those 6 shiny stars.

    Your essay really did touch
    me, thank you! Since reading
it, I've actually been trying to
ask myself what's good in my
    life when I start thinking
    negatively. You never know
    when something you write
    will have an impact on
    someone who needed to read
    it.

A great up-lifting vignette from your past, no doubt. Your prose and dialog are spot on.

I had no similar experiences as a child but discovered my own version of your mother's ruse to eliminate your depression.

I look in a mirror and smile ... amazingly, it works. My depression lessens.

You are correct it is the little things that makes me happy, too, your story certainly did. The picture is perfect and based on your notes, the apple sure doesn't fall far from the tree, and what a great tree.

Exceptional read. Best of luck in the voting.

A wonderful and positive story of a lesson learned in the formative years which carried on into adult life and made all the difference in leading a happy and fulfilled life. Well written with positive energy and a tribute to all those little things that add up to a lifetime of joy!

Yes you're right about being raised in the 40s and 50s, we didn't race off to be consulted by a psychologist or analyst when we were told to "buck up" when we were down in the dumps. Mum was way too busy to worry about me. I remember it started to appear in the movies in the sixties that people had a family analyst. Yes there are a lot of diseases and maladies that have appeared in these latter times, that weren't "invented" in our time. Well done, nicely written, it took me back through the years, good luck in the concert, most eloquent, expressed very well, good luck, blessings, Roy
