I think you are right in what you say in this piece, mystery writer, it is definitely the little things in life that come to us for free which make us happy and the things we will always remember. I enjoyed reading your essay and I thought that your writing flowed well, I couldn't find any faults. Good luck in the contest...Jacob

Quite good. Lighthearted and fun. You have fluid prose. I was smiling early on. I think maybe you have an ear for dialogue as well. Was this a happy memory for you? I assume this is true autobiography. Well it works. What happened to that little girl?

Thanks you for the kind words. Yes, autobiographical. That little girl grew up to be a very happy 'me' who learned early to think about the good stuff. Life has been very good to me and I count my mom among my greatest blessings, though I had her for just under 13 years. I am honored and blessed by your 6 shiny stars!

That was an excellent way to educate and bring up a child to be thankful for all we have. Well narrated and an excellent for all to digest. Good luck in the contest. faye

You had a very smart Mama, but I know that feeling of so sad I've got blues in my stomach.

You wrote a very warm sincere piece that may inspire someone to count their blessings. For me, I'm aware of them and grateful, they usually can't move the boulder on the other side of the see saw.

Hi Mystery Author, this is a really god entry for this particular competition, your dear mother was extremely wise taking your mind off sadness and turning things around until you were no longer sad, I wish you the very best of luck in the contest my friend.

this is an excellent write, mystery writer, I am so touched by the wiseness of your mother in turning your focus around and changing your emotions around by using that tablet, that was so smart. I am so glad you had her in your corner and shared that memory with us. I wish you the best of luck in the contest.

This is terrific. I really like how you started this showing us that some people are just happy. Using a happy baby was a wonderful way to do that. The line about having "blues in my stomach" - ouch. Any parent that heard that would roll up in a corner and die. But I love how you showed how strong your mother was. What a wonderful story! No blame placed. No excuses. Loved it. Very well written.

A perfect read before the holiday of gratitude! Decent writing, stayed on point and focused. I'm glad you added a "this works for me" disclaimer, I like that approach more than a "bossy" essay.
I have minor edits:
Delete this: My point is --and it has certainly taken me a while to get to it -
Change to 1940s, 1950s,
or a parent wringing (delete in)
change to The list is as endless as life is vast or full (or similar), because life does have an end, that is part of what makes the little things so precious and rare.

I will take a look at the spag issues. However, I do not believe life has any ending. I believe we were all alive before we arrived for this time around and we'll continue to live after. Maybe you would like to read my essay "Life Never Ends". Again, thanks.

"She never insisted I continue the list or to even name one thing that made me unhappy. She let me continue to think about the good things in my life."---Your mother was obviously a very intelligent, loving and nurturing woman. Of course she didn't require you to finish the list. That's why she had you write down all of the things in your life you should have been grateful for first, to raise your spirits and chase away the doldrums.

In the end when we're on our deathbed and about to be called home, it isn't the big things we'll remember in life but the little ones, just like this.

Well done, Anonymous author. Best of luck in the voting booths.

Always with respect
~Dean :}

A Walk Down Memory Lane "It's The Little Things.' Well, I must agree with you about the same things. It's the little things in life that mean such a lot to us. We tend to grow up with certain little issues and that is what we remember mostly. Very well done.
