The message comes through loud and clear, it's very well written with a good rhyme and rhythm as well as a good flow and keeps your attention. An excellent piece of poetry. Well done.

I hope you set these lyrics to music--they are very evocative. The "page" and "bridge" metaphors are quite compelling. I hope you were taking on a powerful persona! Cheers- Joan

I can hear you softly singing in the background...
this one aches to be sung... soft and low...

I never meant a thing to you
I'm a page you can not turn
Well, tonight I'm crossing over
A bridge that just won't burn

(this stanza sets the stage for the melancholy which ensues sweet and warm)

I forgot more about you
The day you went away
Than any foolish man
Will know about you today

(shows how knowledge breeds contempt... )

For so long you were the one
To make my world go around
Now look at all these broken hearts
In pieces on the ground

(love these last two lines... love the imagery)

You don't know about a heartache
Till its chiseled out in stone
There's nothing that I know of
Worse than being alone

(actually, the worst thing I know of, is being with the wrong person.... :( )

Tonight I'm crossing over
A bridge that just won't burn
I'm looking back in anger
At a page I can not turn

(love this stanza... well said)

and a sweet country song softly plays... one that you sway to... or two step... or just drown your tears in a root beer. ;)

well done Brett

Will know about you today (Is there an extra syllable here? How about 'will learn about today'? Just a suggestion.)Without the love (joy?)you gave me
Since it's free style I guess my suggestions don't apply. Have you made this into a song?

This is a lovely poem describing the loss of love that just won't go away. I also am intrigued how you play around with the expression 'burned bridges'. I enjoyed reading it very much. Ulla

The meter has great flow and I found I really
enjoyed reading. Free verse isn't a favorite
of mine, but this read so fluid that I didn't
miss rhyme and rhythm. You have me hooked on
your kind of writing. Thanks and the story was
sad, but beautiful as love usually is.

Hello Brett,
What a great image-the bridge that just won't burn. After my husband left me, we both spent the following three years going back and forth, I just could not burn that bridge either. I kept thinking he was going to change his mind and he enjoyed playing with my heart. I really like this poem, it is sad and true.

I really like how you take an old clique "burning bridges" and turn it into a substantial poem. The picture is made for it. I can easily imaging this set to melody.

These are actually rhyming quatrains, Brett. And very nice ones if I say so myself.
Free verse has no rhyme or rhythm. This song/poem has both.
I love the repeat lines--Tonight I'm crossing over
A bridge that just won't burn. They stick in one's mind.
