"My Dad" is a poem that expresses a wonderful tribute. Your choice of a picture sure can't be topped either.
Getting to read a post by you is a good feeling, Irish. Hope to see more soon! Marie

........and I always heard that you were not a man of few words. I read this poem a number of times listening for the invisible words contained within it. You have made good use of symbolism here. There are multi levels or rememberance, one from a grateful country and one from a son still holding on to the dad he has never let go of. You reveal a great deal about your sensitivity here. It is not easy to pack such a powerful punch into the face of restricted word and syllable count. But you artfully mixed sentmentality with celebration; a terific one-two if I have ever seen one. The accompaning picture was great too. I am not one who usually thinks much of pictures with poems. However, I don't think the poem would be the same without this one. They were ideally matched.

I take it you have returned home just in time for fall fishing. Bet you are good and ready for some of that down-home living and back to your little slice of pair-a-dice. We are in the midst of accepting a loved ones journey to the happy hunting ground. The father of Robbin's three children past away yesterday after a brave fight with cancer over the last year. Kept my brain busy thinking all last night and most of today as well. It is funny how death is so common yet sometimes difficult to grasp. I just saw him this last Wednesday. Now, like some act of magic he has disappeared.............but not from memory. Your poem was most timely. I too still feel the hand I held of his while saying my last good-bye to him.

Wishing you well with all the caring thoughts that go along with it.

Your pal, joe

Joseph, I cannot tell you how much your words mean to me. I am saddened at your and Robbins loss. Cancer took my brother and many of my friends.

I have never met someone with your depth of understanding. And, we've never even met! The source of our humanity from such humble beginnings, millions of years ago, have led us to our present impasse. Our marvelous technology continues to move far ahead of our burgeoning love and tolerance of each other and the rare voices in the wilderness, such as your, are drowned out in the cacophony of the latest cell-phone fad.
Well-met that we have this medium for exchange.
In VA until 16th Sept, Wyoming by 18th and will try for some of those giant Fall trout still lurking in the Big Horn River.
    Salutations to you and yours,
    Cal-

This is a very special poem, Irish. You've not only 'nailed' the form, but your insight here is penetrating and solid. It's hard to imagine the many years of pain that young child will face, though knowing his father was a hero should help a little.

Good luck with this excellent contest entry!

:) Bev

Thank you Bev, for your kind words and the stars! Don't usually enter these contests but thought this might raise hopes for better treatment for our returning vets.

Ah, so sad, Irish. We send children off to war and leave their children orphans. That small flag is so poingnant next to the tombstone.

Good to see you, Cal. Good luck in the contest, my friend.

This is a great entry for the contest, It evokes emotion and causes the reader to pause and think. Writing it in the first person narrative makes it personal.
Nice alliteration of (s) in the first and second lines.

Thank you Dallas, for your kind words and the stars! Wrote this 'on the spur,' (I'm Irish, what can I say?) but also to bring attention to the deplorable way our returning vets are treated.

So touching...
it's always so heartbreaking when
you see something like this...
I usually want to shout at the parent,
"How could you leave your child an orphan!?"

I have little understanding.
I could never leave my child.
It's my duty... to be with them.

but that's my take on it.
Most people disagree with my take on it. lol

This breaks my heart.

It does make me smile, however, to see you here, and especially...
to see you writing...
as always, your words evoke emotions.
That's the best part.

I hope you are well?
Cat

Wow, just posted that. This was prompted by a small boy placing the flag at his father's marker at Arlington Cemetery. Brought tears to my eyes, as the boy knelt and stuck the flag into the soft earth, struggling for understanding.
Thank you for your kind words, and the stars,

Ah... yes, it's does do that... you should see the photo I took at the funeral of my best friend's father. It was a military funeral... and i was taking photos of them laying the flag across the casket... it was only later that I realized what I had a photo of... her youngest daughter had saluted the casket... and she was in the background... We asked her, "Montana, why did you salute Pops?" she said, "We salute all our heroes" :(

It is the sweetest photo EVER.
And it was a complete fluke.

It's very touching when that happens.
    :)
Nice to see you dear man. :)
