I really enjoyed this. Robert Service is one of my favorites. I have all his works. I love that his poetry was so simple, yet full of story.

This is a lovely tribute to Robert Service.

    Hi damommy,

Service is one of my absolute favorites. I grew up here in Alaska, so he just feels 'local' to us with all of the gold rush and Yukon poetry. He's been a favorite of mine since I was a kid. In 6th grade I had a teacher that would read his poems to us and do the accents, too. Got me hooked!!

    Thanks for reading and reviewing.

Tingling to read this work illustrates descriptive line structuring and pleasing conveyances in a interesting write. I found this read warming in its presentation.

This author acrostic about Service reminded me of my father. This was his favorite poet and The Cremation of Sam McGee was his favorite poem. He knew it and Longfellow's Song of Hiawatha by heart.

You did an excellent job of capturing the ambiance of the great state of Alaska in your tribute to Service. The imagery is very clear and the rhythm and rhyme flawless. Best of luck in the contest with this fine write.

Very earthy. I like how you developed the character of the ones who toiled in the wilderness land and the bleak existence for the women who ventured there. The contrast of the newcomers was a fresh perspective. It seemed short to me. I wanted to hear more about their impressions of the land itself but perhaps the format limited that.

Hi Glenn... this was an Acrostic, which, of course, spelled out Robert W. Service. Thus, I used the maximum number of lines to accommodate. If you are familiar with Robert W. Service, it was written in his style, as a tribute to him and his poetic legacy. If you haven't ever read him, I totally recommend that you read the following titles: The Cremation of Sam McGee, The Shooting of Dan McGrew, The Spell of the Yukon, and for a good laugh, Bessie's Boil. Thanks for taking the time to read and review.

I think this poem is very beautiful. It really seems to capture the essence of Alaskan starlight and the legendary northern lights. The lines "Erstwhile...replies" I loved the most, and the use of language seemed very intelligent and poetic. I really liked this one!

Thanks for the clarifying glossary. I enjoyed this poem and was able to immerse myself in the Alaska of the gold-rush days (or is it still like this??!) One tiny thing I might have done differently is to use... 'neath Northern lights...rather than beneath, but that's just because I like how it sounds. Well done!

Hi! Thank you so much for your kind words. You know, I started out with 'neath, but changed it. Alaska still has areas where you find the gold rush spirit and final frontier attitude, but there are areas for those wanting all the amenities, as well. Thank you for taking the time to review my poem.

Hi mystery author, This is a really good entry for this particular competition, I must admit I have never heard of Robert W Service but I am sure your wonderfully rhymed poem does him justice. I wish you the best of luck in the contest my friend.
