This is a terrific scene with the most accurate description of a carny member with weathered skin, self-made tattoos, clothes that were a second skin by then, and a personality that began with caution, awaiting permission to be a happy, free-spirited soul.

This is a great little scene. The narrator relates to the carnival man by recalling the grandpa who had a circus. You give such a great description of the carnival man--his leathery skin, the old red bike. It seems that his face told the story of his 40 years of working with the carnival. Great details, and a memorable guy. judi

I love this remarkable picture that you've written. Everything is so clear, I can almost hear him as he warms to your greeting and is willing to share mutual experiences.
I especially like the last four lines.
/Nearly forty years of carney life;
Father Time, hard work, beer
and cigarettes
were etched across his face. /

Knew this one had to be about a Grandpa somewhere, some how. Well written poem clearly depicts scenes of yesteryear, his time, that will probably never be seen again.

This is a wonderful poem in every way. Descriptions, scene, content, characters. My uncle worked for a carnival for years. He had the stories to tell. Good job. Marilyn/BeasPeas

Great poetry. Describing an old man came rifing on an old red bike. Memories of your grandfather who owned a carnival once upon a time. All the hard work,beer and cigarettes over time etched across his face.

Yes, I can picture the man, the sheepishness at first and then the ride which he wore with steady gaze. Your comments then opened the door to conversation and you summarized how his carney life, hard work, cigarettes, and beer were etched on his face. The commonality brought back memories of your grandfather's carnival. All starts from being observant and noticing the hand drawn carnival scenes in ink when the man enters the store.

I like the sharp line division between the incident and the commentary. This was a big story wrapped up in only two stanzas. Thanks for sharing.

this is an excellent write, Theresa, you did an excellent job writing this free verse poem about the man that reminded you of your grandfather's carnival so you were able to relate to him. I enjoyed reading it
