I don't do well when children die in real life for in stories. I know it's reality, but I see so many unwanted and abused kids in my school. Good luck with the contest.

    Thanks so much for reading my Tiny Tale, Barbara. I sincerely appreciate your review, and I'm pleased to know that you enjoyed the story. This story is not going to be entered in any contests , LOL. Just another chapter in our multi-authored book.

True mastery of horror leaves the scares in what is unsaid, the jolt the reader steered to fill in the blanks. You achieve that jolt in spades...of grave dirt. Excellent short one that is both psychological and supernatural.

This deserved an exceptional rating because the words at the end gave me a real shock. So he killed her to keep her mouth shut but her ghostly screams became worse after the poor child's death. Very well done, Dean.

Heh, heh, heh. Your writing is scarily good, as always. I don't think this guy has a ghost of a chance of getting a sitter for this kid (especially on the graveyard shift). Evi

Creepy baby ghost, sooooo, did he kill the baby, or is this a psychological thing where the mother leaves because she can't take the pain of having lost a child, and the poor father is going crazy because he lost them both? Or, have I been reading way too many stories on Fanstory????

    That's the beauty of flash/micro fiction, Rhonda. Much is left open for you to decide and interpret the way you see fit. But since you asked, my intent was your last scenario--the wife left because she couldn't deal with the fact of having aborting their baby, and he couldn't deal with the guilt of allowing her to do so.
    I very much appreciate your review. Thanks for reading. ~Dean

Oh dear. The thing that makes this all the more chilling I think, is that things like this actually happen, all the time-- and not at the hands of some psycho serial killer type, but some normal, and possibly quite nice person who has just reached their limit and snapped. That is a very scary thought.

Well done Dean, simple and effective.

If you ever need the perfect music to go with this, I think Tim Minchin has written the ideal song. It's called "Lullaby":

Thanks for sharing. I'm glad my kids have all grown up and flown the coop, otherwise I might not be getting too much sleep :)

    Thanks so much for reading my Tiny Tale, Craig. I sincerely appreciate your review, and I'm pleased to know that you enjoyed the story. I'll look into that video link you mentioned, although it seems to put folks off their feed a bit (so to speak) when I add soundtracks to these stories.
    Thanks so much again! ~Dean :}

OMG Dean - how could you write something like this, LOL. It really gave me a shock - so sudden. I always think horror/sad stories where children are concerned pack the biggest punch. Yet one more good one from you. Warm regards Dorothy x

    Thanks so much for reading my Tiny Tale, Dorothy. I sincerely appreciate your review, and I'm pleased to know that you enjoyed the story. I also agree that horror stories which feature children are some of the most terrifying.

Good shocker at the end wrapped this up perfectly. Terrific idea and well executed with minimal wording. I see that it's 99 words. With one more added this would have easily won the 100 word horror prompt taking entries now. Too bad you didn't see it.

    Thank you very much, Phyllis, and I did see that prompt. I just think I've worn out my welcome where contests are concerned. I've now lost seven in a row, the latest being the Nuances of Noise contest. So rather than waste my time and hard earned funny money on a blind entry that might get six reviews and two votes (if I was lucky), I opted for the exposure instead.
    I appreciate your review, and your kind comments as well.

    I see your point. I don't usually enter blind contests for the same reason... fans don't get notified and numbr of reviews is absurd.

Yours are the only poems for which I hold up my hands or a book to block my view of the animation on the screen because I know it is going to be something horrible that will give me night terrors. But, as the tired man said, "I gotta get some sleep." Poor kiddie. You are WRITE. He did not stand a ghost of a chance. Thank you for scaring.

Dean;
-what a wonderfully thought out and well conceived story, short as it may be, that leaves much to be desired is the concept blew me away at the end. He was troubled with the crying of his daughter who had passed away forever haunting him throughout his time.
-Thank you so much for sharing and posting and may the good Lord be with you always Dean.
