Good suggestions all Michael but I doubt anything will change.
I think the suggestion about the reviewing was good. A reviewer is important. Reviewers are getting few and far between. Maybe more recognition would encourage more participation. The list FS provides has only two reviewers who have ever reviewed me and that was just a few times. Well done. Nancy

Great essay, Mikey. Of course you know that nothing will change, unless it's something new that messes up the site even more. Nice to dream though. :)

Some really good thoughts and suggestions here, Michael. Its great to see a person who wants to be part of the solution, not just part of the problem. Good for you. I also enjoy (as always) the snippets of humour sprinkled throughout your more serious stuff. Nice balance.

Yes, I think you are right. Duplication shows that many people shows the same concerns. As always, this is very well written and well thought out. Good job and good luck.
Take care.
Christelle.

Nothing more entertaining than one of your essays. You manage to get your points across beautifully and still maintain your uniwue style. One in a million talent. You really can write anything. :)

Hi Mikey,

I can appreciate most of the sentiments expressed here but of course one of your suggestions is that we don't do that.

That makes it hard to comment on the suggestions! I think it would be good if the author wrote what they wanted from the reviewer of their piece in the author's notes. I did this on one of my pieces - some people got offended by this and stated they wouldn't read any more but I did get a decent following for the story and help with exactly what I wanted.

I don't believe in a tiered system - I think its too subjective. It comes down to a confidence thing I think. People don't want to take on the 'big boys' as they put it. Why not? You can be successful on the site without spending lots of money, without posting loads of times a week.

I am a newbie - like yourself I had written very little before joining the site, and never prose. Getting help and nurturing / understanding from more established writers is invaluable - even if you don't consider it so at the time. One established writer I had a disagreement with over a short line still will not review any of my work! (It got published the way it was, so I feel sort of vindicated!).

Anyway, I digress - I review from the random selector on a regular basis and there is some great work rolling around that never gets seen. Mind you I have a small fan base so I may have more time.

I also love the fact that even when you right an essay like this, it is still fundamentally you. The style, tone and so on. You also sponsor a lot of contests on the site which is something else that needs looked at.

Good stuff, and I have read every one posted so far. If a topic interests me, I read all entries. There are some of us out there!

All the best
G
welcome I received her - here.

Mikey, you present some intriguing ideas here. I wholeheartedly agree with some of them. I proposed a 'Trophy room' to Tom earlier this year which is very similar to your idea. I completely agree that a nomination for story, book, or poem of the month should be shown on your profile and in your trophy room. I also agree that second and third place should have a medal of their own.
Most of the rest of your points I agree with, except for two. The skill level would be extremely difficult to implement, and who would judge skill level?
Next, that poets should receive more awards.
I have written a poem or two but mostly I write prose. Why should I be number six on the list and be out of the awards when I work just as hard if not harder on my novel? It takes much longer and more effort to write a two thousand word chapter than a two hundred word poem, why should poets be awarded more due to sheer volume?
If you're looking at numbers, the last time I checked there were over one thousand reviewers on this site. Yet how many reviewer of the year awards are there?
Most of your points are excellent, and I would love to see them implemented. A couple still need some work.
Your essay/rank was wonderfully done, extremely intelligent, and way too long. :)

I enjoyed your essay and it does not sound preachy as much as practical, Mikey. Using US and WE removes the preachiness a lot so I would not worry about people feeling irked on that account. I think you've made valid points in an articulate and lucid manner and I applaud them all (some more than others)! Also, it flows well and I noticed only one typo.

NOTES:

This made me grin:
Indeed, I've been known to go off on lovely verbose rants spewing enough hot air to steam a picnic weenie. But, we are word people and sometimes we just can't help it.

Good points and a fine approach to addressing the issue from two perspectives, both equally relevant:

There are two types of improvements as I see it. Number one would be improvements with policy and procedure i.e. practical improvements. Number two would be improvements concerning our own approach and commitment as members.

Standing ovation for this one:

3: We desperately need a reviewing tutorial with front-page access. There is a listing of recognized reviewers on the front page. I think that is fine and an important matter to highlight. However, few of the listed members are active and the list isn't even up to date. Wouldn't this space be better served by highlighting a link to an extensive reviewing page? The page could include the list of Recognized Reviewers, Fanstory reviewing standards as well as tutorials on proper reviewing. Perhaps there might even be a forum-style discussion site there.

I agree there should be a tutorial link highlighted prominently on the front page. However, I do not agree that it should replace the RR list. First of all, because all other ranks are noted, reviewing should not be dropped off, even though it already resides at the BOTTOM of the page.

And, considering how it is on the bottom of the page, it's not the most prominent place for the above-mentioned link to appear.

I agree with number 4...great idea!

For number 5, I am not sure I agree, as the majority are SELF-PUBLISHED, which anyone can do, even if their work is not of a publishable caliber.

Good points about contests, too, and I especially applaud this one:

3: Finally, these are WRITING contests. Subject matter should not in and of itself determine your vote, quality writing should.

*TYPO: The welcome I received her(e) as a newbie meant the world to me.

This makes a very good entry...good luck in the contest, and thanks for sponsoring this contest..very good idea! Very helpful.

Love,
rd

i have read several other entries for this contest. Mike, thank you for voicing opinions we all share with you. One other thing i want to suggest is having some incentive to read ALL of the entries in a contest. It takes just as much time to read a two cent piece as it does one that offers $1.02.
I agree with you about making our new members feel welcome. We should fan them and encourage them to fan us. Find out what they like to read and nudge them in that direction.
I have enjoyed your work over the last two years and you have always been encouraging and kind.
You have some solid ideas and suggestions and I am thankful you shared.
I certainly agree with the suggestion that less experienced or newer members get to compete in group by themselves.
Help us stay on track, Mike, you certainly are a mentor. Linda

Oh man, I love that picture of Rod Sterling, haha, I know it's Serling but it leads us right into the Twilight Zone.

I think the site does a pretty good job already featuring published site authors, but I agree with you a page with a complete list would make the selection easier.

I don't see too many complaints about the site, mostly right now it seems to be the Compliance Committee that is attracting a little attention which is to be expected. And the good news is, reviewers are starting to pay more attention to contest instructions and are advising authors to amend their work to be contest compliant. The membership has pulled together pretty good on that one.

I can't think of any good ideas for the voting booths, but I might as the days go by. Likely not though, because it's one of those conundrums.

I like puppy pictures, and even more so, cat pictures. I'd post a lot more of them if I could figure out how to work them into my themes. *wink*

One little nit:

The welcome I received her (here) as a newbie meant the world to me. - Aw, that's sweet. :-)

Overall Mikey, good job. You got your points across respectfully and with your signature panache. Excellent contest subject.

Gloria
