Hi Michael I have stopped by to read all the entries before I vote and along with the others you have some very valid points to make and being a new comer to the site of only a few months I have learn't heaps about writing styles and types of poetry etc that I had no idea about before joining .Having written poetry all my life I just wrote how I feel. I didn't even know about meter and syllable counts etc or Haiku or alliteration and heaps of other things. Had never really thought about it I usually write as the subject comes to mind , but I have really enjoyed having a go ( good or bad) and meeting some great people and connecting with like minded writers . I enjoy reading and reviewing work and try to give a honest opinion but as you state it is hard to keep up with everyone. However I did enjoy your entry and can see your experience of this site in your words. So Thanks for putting on your post Good luck for the contest too Cheers Christine

Hi, Christine. Your experience sounds almost exactly like mine. I've been here two years now. I started just like you with no knowledge of, well, anything! It's been fun learning all of this stuff and it has helped me improve no doubt. I love the people and just the atmosphere of being around "my own kind". :)
I'm pleased a lot of the entries mentioned the same things. Maybe with a consensus we can get a few changes going here and there. Thanks for reading and the great review. mikey

wow!!! You nailed a lot of things that needed to be addressed. Very interesting insight to those matters. I do like in particular the suggestion about different levels of competition. I started writing with Faithwriters. They have four levels. I was so pleased that within five entries I had advanced three levels. What a great feeling. I do hope the board (or whomever) takes you suggestions into consideration.

Hi Michael. You penned some pretty real opportunities here for both the website and for us writers. You also reminded the writers why they are here as to improve themselves. Yeah, I have to agree on the puppy pics too. Take care and cheers.

I enjoyed your piece. You put a lot of thought in it. I agree with most of it. I would offer one more suggestion. More people should vote. I see a small amount of votes for the large amount of people on the site. Great work.

These are excellent topics and ideas and I agree with every one of them, in particular the ones about content over writing quality and reading new writers-I have been doing it for so long and I edit things for them, never downgrade and actually think the quality of writing is superior to some that are paying big bucks. Well expressed, presented very succinctly-you deserve to win, good luck, Mikey. Faye

Excellent artwork that complements your story absolutely perfectly. I can relate to you suggestions, which means I agree with them. Reviewing more is not possible for me as it takes me longer than English-spoken people. I hope you did not refer to me when you mentioned puppies. Best wishes for the contest. A worthy entry.

I'm guilty of reviewing people over and over, people who simply do not allow spags in their posts, and since I do not weigh content, my reviewing is akin to reading a
comic book for fun, with a fluff comment, and an aha for a spag once in a blue moon. If a post is a mare's nest, I skip, or, following Brooke's theory, I give advice AND five stars...your essay is well written and full of sound ideas, and like you said, others agree....

* Is a good thought that I don't recall hearing about before. (Why not add that a piece was a second place winner in a site contest or even an honorable mention? These are great accomplishments and should be noted.)
* #4 is a repeat suggestion and a decent one, but nothing has been done to investigate the possibility of implementing this idea.
* 5 agree and long overdue. As a published author, I sure would like some additional support and exposure.
CONTESTS:
* 1 -- I try, but there are times when it is too much to read everything, so I avoid voting.
* 2 & 3 -- agreed. I didn't know this was happening. I write my reviews from the heart. I voice my opinion and rate the piece accordingly. We shouldn't be expected to like everything and I will state this fairly, but it also doesn't reflect in my score.
#4 -- I seldom review poetry just for this reason. I don't pretend to know what I'm reading and then rate a poem just for the points earned. I read for enjoyment and then move onto the next.
YOUR NOTES -- agreed. I've read them all thus far. I also see many similarities which to mean of 'like minds.'

***I do have one criticism. Is it really fair to the other entries for the organizer of the contest to enter? I ask because when I posed a contest prompt, I put a great deal of thought into the subject. I therefore excluded myself because it didn't seem fair to the others and I personally didn't think it was the right thing to do. I've often seen the winner ultimately to be the composer of the contest.

Thank you for your knowledgeable and clearly written essay. I found many points of good value.

Hi Michael!
I DO plan to read all of these entries with great interest. I've been on this site quite some time and watched lots of changes over time, and have also watched the same old/same old persist. I used to have somewhat of a reputation for being quite the ranter myself. To be honest, I've given up and just go with the flow. Just for the record, I am not at all interested in ratings, rankings and medals. I find it all to be a huge farce, requiring a large outlay of either money or time. And, often, those that are at the top, or have recognized poems, are those that promote the most, or enjoy a large audience - not necessarily those that are the best writers.

If I were asked, these would STILL be on my list of desired changes:

1. Get rid of the erroneous, inaccurate prompts.
2. Completely rewrite "Poetry Dances" so it reflects correct information and examples about various poetry forms.
3. Make everything "Not Blind." The whole idea of "Blind" is a farce. Anyone can find any "blind" post simply by visiting someone's portfolio.

That said, I do agree several of your suggestions: 1) that everyone read every post before voting, and know what they're talking about when they review and vote (which also means they read and understand the requirements of the prompt); 2) that there be contests for varying levels of ability (this can be done now by simply saying that the contest is only open to those who haven't won previously or who have a certain amount of time on the site); 3) that members take on some responsibility themselves as opposed to just bitching and ranting; and 4) there be reviewing guidelines that are clearly posted and accessible.

Your essay is well written, clearly organized and flows well. And, yes, it stops just in time LOL!

Best of luck in the contest. Sue
