I could understand how the crowd might call the pyrotechnician homophobic in response to his, "I am straight . . . I'm proud of it!" But not racist. As the person who wrote these words, you sounded as if you equated racism and homophobia, which is clearly nonsense.

Sorry, but it's how I feel.

Well, this is a compelling and controversial little read. You are sure to stir up some comments. Sad, isn't it, that free speech only seems to work for some groups and not for others. Why can't he say he is straight and have everyone accept it? It feels like discrimination for the crowd to react like that. What are they afraid of? If he said he was gay wouldn't it be accepted? Can't we live in harmony? For him to be walked out because of it just doesn't seem right.

Wow! Wouldn't this be something if "straight" became a victim of prejudice? In this case, fireworks has a metaphoric meaning as well. Good story.

Well, good for Steve Levine. Isn't he permitted to voice his sexual preferences? Gays hold parades flaunting their sexuality. But, God forbid a straight man stand up and say so.

Look, I refuse to cast judgement on anyone. It's their lives and they're going to have to deal with the ramifications of the choices they've made eventually, just as all of us sinners will one day have to. But getting outraged at a guy for saying he's straight and proud of it is being a little ridiculous. What if the shoe were on the other foot? What if he'd said, "I'm Steve Levine, I'm gay, and I'm proud of it!" His proclamation would have most likely have been met with uproarious applause.

Good luck in the contest. ~Dean

Interesting irony in this one. The setting is July 4, when every person's right to be the individual he chooses to be should be celebrated. What is interesting here is all you are able to imply in a mere 60 words about equality and freedom of expression

LOL, that is so funny! Being straight and not being able to be proud of it. Isn't that the way of the world these days.
Good luck in the contest, its a great entry. xsx sandra

To the author of "A Pyrotechnician", Interesting story in sixty words. The photo art and theme is appropriate for this date and time. Good luck in the contest. Carole

Hi there,

Gotta say I really liked this entry to the competition.

"They" worked out a while ago that the most discriminated person in the world was male, married, over thirty, straight, white, and employed. How in the Hell did that happen!

All the best in the voting.

Nice job with the 60 words or less story. I know it is hard to do. Your mini story has suspense and it is well written. Good job!
