A preview on old age, what a blessing to grow old. That last invitation of a dear old friend to attend his funeral. Be glad you can still go, make it a happy occasion, get away from the daily drill, that certainly gets boring after a while, the same thing at the same time every day. Just like trees we grow, we fall and at the end decay

What a sad way to look at a life. It is a new metaphor. It seems bad that she is happy to go to a funeral and that it is the only way she can get out of the nursing home.

Nicely written haibun.

Keep writing

My mother used to treat a visit to the grave site where she would be buried as a field trip.... ow, she's there. Thanks.

I think this poem is funny and sad at the same time. Poor woman, to be so excited about a funereal. She must be very lonely in her life to look forward to a friends death. Thank you for sharing.

For some people, a funeral is a big deal for a social event. Thanks.

Hey, this is good. Even better than your last haibun, I think. You are at serious risk of becoming an authority on haibun. Such a wonderful frugality of words, each one carries a wealth of insight, a collection of stories. I wish I had a sixer left.

Many congratualations from a scrap of firewood,
Adrian

I really, blush, blush, don't think I'm an authority on anything, but thanks for the stroking. PSST...I have a lighter. We can still burn. baby.

Oh, Ingrid! This is a perfect example of the Haibun, perfectly executed, with humor, deep insight, delightful self-deprecation: "Not noticing the rancid smell of decay, twenty-year Chanel suits me--I know. 'Death becomes you,' I want to say, but I'm much too happy--I'm going out today." >> Oh, and did I forget to mention the underpining of the Tragi-Comedy of the human condition.

You NAILED this!

An unusually vivid haibun. I can see and hear this woman who used an invitation to Joe's funeral to leave the nursing home slop and dine at the reception. This was wickedly fun, and the poem ends on a grace note with its haiku on young and old trees.

Thank you for sharing.
