This is a tear jerking story ..
yes, Duke is now in a better place ..
but there are so many dogs still out there being abused by their owners ..
I don't understand these people ..they show no love or care towards their pet ..they treat them as if they are a burden to have around yet Duke's owner would have killed Duke rather than see him escape.. how evil is that ?
I believe in karma and abusive owners will pay for all the cruelty they hand out.
I watch a lot of Hope For Paw rescues .. they do such a wonderful job saving strays and relocating them in forever happy homes.
Bless them .
PS. I read many of your entries and what transpires mostly from your work is your empathy and compassion for others.

I'm Blown away. Seriously. Thank you. Like I said, you don't realize how much this means to me. I'm insecure about my writing. Well just in general maybe and it spills over to my writing.
These small pieces have helped keep me succinct. This was before I knew about flash fiction even.
And I AGREE. How does Anyone hurt an animal. I mean cats maybe. Haha I'm joking I love all animals. Allergic to cats but I still love all. I have a dog and two desert tortoises. And two lizards for the kids.
What is paw rescues? That sounds good

No need to be insecure about your writing .. it?s is very soulful ..
Hope for Paws is a Rescue team that goes out and saves strays ..
It?s run by a man ( I recognised his voice) he coordinates the rescues on the field and has volunteers .that help.
... he also has lots of vets that lend a hand and charge less
Some rescues are easy but others are complicated but they never give up on any stray ..
they have a phone number people ring advising them of a stray is in need of help ..
They do great and help so many find a loving forever home all dogs and cats deserve.

Well there's no question that this one should be the winner! A well crafted piece, with a clear plot line (all within 300 words, wow!) and, best of all, a GREAT 'twist' at the end - something lacking in all the other entries. Bravo! Your author notes were PARTICULARLY appreciated!

I found this disturbing in so many ways . It is well written and in line with the prompt. Am I an animal lover yes is that what disturbed me no the words made me realise that so etimes we are so beaten that we too like this poor animal have so much mistrust that we cannot be helped

Oh wow that is truly truly appreciated. It spoke to me too. I'm a huge animal lover too. I loathe people that hurt animals. HOW do they do it. Thank you again Angela so very much.

Last paragraph needs to be re-edited. Definitely a case of trying to do the right thing and it all turns out wrong. Only change I would make is the old drunk would be in "Duke's" place and have the same thing done to him in spades.
