Congratulations on your win, Ingrid. Loved the allusion to the picket fence at the end. I used to watch an all American small town TV series called 'Picket Fences' and it must be a reference to her seeing him as marriage material. She's looked after his needs, but a real kiss changes all that. Nice mix of sentiment, sex and future reality.

Thanks, Mark. Quite a few didn't understand the picket fence reference. I guess one must be of a certain age.

After the first reading, I didn't understand the final paragraph. So I read the piece again, and I now think I may get it. I suspect my problem is that I am British, and so do not fully understand the symbolism of a picket fence to an American.
I'm guessing that a picket fence is, perhaps, a symbol of respectability. If so, I suppose the last paragraph means that Mary has decided to move in, and it is her jokey way of saying, "I hope I've made the right choice".
Please do tell me if I am off target. Good luck with the contest.

Yes, I suppose the picket fence in a North American term, but one that dates back forty years. The 'dream' of many young girls was to be married, have children, a dog and a house with a white picket fence. Prostitutes rarely kiss their clients, thinking it too intimate, reserving that for those they love. Thanks for the read and I'm sorry it was vague information.

I'm guessing from the reference to a picket fence, Mary is thinking the American Dream. The narrator may be scared in the face, but makes up for it in others ways. Marriage to a freak has got to be better than walking the streets. :-)
