Another well written piece with great rhyme and flow throughout. As someone who has lived through abuse, I thank you for writing on the subject. We need to keep creating awareness and educating, if we are ever going to make a dent in stopping it or slowing it down. Have you sent your songs anywhere? You may have some great hits here!

I knew this would happen! I just knew it! I award my final sixth star of the week and the very next thing that turns up is you - with this! This is the bleakest and most compelling song lyric I have come across in years. The last verse left me chilled to the marrow.

The whole thing is so beautifully understated yet the horror of childhood abuse comes over clear as a bell as does the horror of the prisoner's situation.

That deep dark place cannot be pleasant to go into but there are some sure powerful lyrics coming out.

WE all go there once in awhile I go there myself.
I shock the reader of some of the things I write, but they judge me only by the stuff I wrote.
Thank you for sharing.

This work has reached the exceptional level

The darker side of life is pictured in this poem. Therefore the poet sees freedom yet in the dark to be available.
So interesting to read. Read by prisoners and lawyers.

Brett....I cant comment on "meter"...."rhyme" ....." any of that "IMPORTANT" stuff ( wink wink ) but I CAN review based on the emotional response of a piece. I might not totally GET what a writer is trying to say in a piece.......but when it hits me DEEP.....( based on what I THINK THE PIECE IS SAYING ) that is when I feel compelled to rate a poem well. This poem affects me that way. Because what I draw from it is a man....who both loves and hates his parent. He does the only thing that HE can think to do to FREE himself of a lifetime of tormnent from a disturbed ( if well meaning ) father. He then must pay the ultimate price for that decision to free himself. Very powerful.....and although I cannot relate to THAT level......I relate to a man who MUST free himself from the pain of the past. Well done my friend.

You DO dig deep don't you? I know those places... been there.
I enjoyed this... sort of a feeling like a Johnny Cash song.
I enjoyed it a lot.
People will do what they have to do to survive. Truth.

The only change I can see (and it might not be a change, just my misunderstanding?)

This line: "The Judge was sympathetic and he put me in this cell"
he looked at me and told me, "You can go to hell"

So.... was he sympathetic or not? Because it sounds like he wasn't...

perhaps it could have read more like this?

"The Judge was sympathetic, but he put me in this cell"
he said to me, tragically, "You know you'll go to Hell".

I don't know... just a thought.
Well done, as always,
Cat

That line is meant to be cynically said. Thanks for your comments and support.

Oh yes a little dark place but truly understood by me.
I can honestly say I have been there and done just that but came to my senses before it got out of hand.
Nicely written for many reasons...the hardship, the humor, the desperation.

A truly sad, sad story, but well told in a song-like meter and with wonderful rhyming. It is a country song in every way except for the tune, which I could almost, but not quite hear. (Do you have music for this one? ) The poem flows smoothly and the story too... No bumps and no spag anywhere. You are a careful editor. Well done!

Another great song Matt! I think his woman was cheating on him so he lit the house on fire and killed her and ended up going to jail. It reminded me of an ols Garth Brooks song where a trucker comes home early to find his wife in bed with another man and he runs his truck into the house and kills her. Can't remember the name. Keep writing Matt!

Actually it is about being sexually and physically abused by his father who he killed by burning the house down to stop it. Appreciate your comments.

Hi, Brett...

Excellently told story of abuse at the hand of his father, who is supposed to be a man of God. Sadly, these kind of people get away with the abuse, and then when the victim can't take it anymore, has to take things into their own hands, then they pay again by what society dictates. Suddenly, the abused become the bad guy.

Your story it spot on.

Cheers & Blessings
