This is an excellent song but also so sad. The poor kid had to stop the abuse somehow. Well don with this absolutely marvelous lyrics which you composed for us. Great stuff indeed.

Hi Brett, what can i say, a fantastic poem and a wonderful lyrical song, this one suits either! Great use of imagery and description and a rhythm and flow to die for!

Lament is felt with each word
The soul gives in time
Watching the fire move along
With the years that now prolong

Each time the thought of a fire burns
The arsonist bestows a pure art
That longs to find the darkest time
In the light of day with a spark

So here I feel the strife inside
As the longing for fire bids
But in this prison no fire comes
It is now forbidden

This is a well versed poem. The story is a sad one, but sometimes it is the only way out. I think there is a grey area of the law that no one wants to explore, and you did in your poem. Thank you for sharing.

This is certainly a bit on the dark side but we all have a dark side to us. Well written song lyrics Brett.

Very detailed Brett. The piece itself does have a kind of darkened Johnny Cash feel to it since you hinted that your inmate was abused by his father when he was younger. To be honest I believe you painted the picture of a prisoner perfectly. Very realistic well done.

Wow! What a moving poetry. I can feel the pains, the angst, and the misery of the persona in this poem. Your rhyme scheme is perfect and word choices are appropriate to the subject.

Burned the house down with him in. Had to stop that sexual and physical abuse somehow. Remember, this is only a Country song not reality.

This is very interesting to me. It reflects a real memory. As a child, I grew up in a strict religious home in the bible belt. learned that every little thing, even thoughts were evil...Then, it was discovered the pastor of our church had been molesting his daughters for years...what a spin...we never know what flips a person to dark behavior that leads them to jail, death...or doom

what can we say, people who commit crimes have to pay, they will harm others if not, sad though, so many have not had love, guidence or help with their disabilities.

Even worse is being sexually and physically abused by your own Father. The theme of this song. Thanks for your comments.
