I'm giving this a 5 because I think it is well-written. However, I strongly disagree with your premises. My experience, based on many years of working with people in distress, is that those who believe in something bigger than themselves do best. I think one only has to consider the magnitude and beauty of nature, or the human body, to "know" that there is some creative force in the universe, of which we are as yet unaware. What I tell people who think they way you do, though, is that all we really know about how we live on after death is that we live in the memories of others. All the rest is theory. I do like the story of a newbie at an AA meeting. He was having trouble with the concept of a "Higher Power." A wizened old women sat at the front of the room, chain-smoking Parliaments. "I know one thing about the Higher Power, buddy," she cackled. "What's that?" he inquired. "It ain't you," she replied.

Belief is nothing more than false hope. The higher power imbues all creation. Thanks for your review...John

G'day mate. This is a very interesting read, it is almost like an essay on belief systems. I agree with you to a point, but I also think that without belief many poeple would have nothing, hope included. I enjoyed this as it certainly gave me food for thought, well done. Good luck in the contest, cheers Fez

Hi Mystery author, this is a really good entry for this 'I believe' competition, it certainly meets all the criteria and you make a really good arguement in your essay.
Good luck in the contest my friend.

Hi there,
Your fundamental statement at the beginning of the piece is flawed. To believe in nothing but then state a reliance on knowledge, science, and truth. Moreover, how many times has science got it wrong?
It is impossible to improve our understanding without awareness and an open mind; also much patience. This is contradictory to your opening statement also - where is your open-mindedness about belief and religion. Which has NOT been proven to be categorically untrue - just a thought.
Knowledge is not always truth.
A well written and thought provoking piece but unless written ironically, flawed

You are not yet at the point where you realize truth is the ONLY reality. Religion is just a mind trap for ignorant people -- nothing more. Each of us has the ability to break the chains of indoctrination, but most will relinquish their power to think by giving credence to others' teachings. You have the truth. It is not by my words or anyone else's words that will make you understand. It is by your determination to understand what you are that you will see reality...John

Truth is a concept, and not a constant thing. What is true for one person, is not necessary true for another. Truth, fact and knowledge are not the same thing at all.
I didn't say I disagreed with you on certain points but you can't say people need to be open minded to one aspect whilst being closed off to another. I do agree about religious teachings and so on. I grew up in a religion dominated society, and I stepped away from it all. You don't know me so don't claim that you know where I am in my life, or understanding simply because I may differ from you. That makes you no better than those you 'ridicule'.
