I thought the word artist meant that a person just dabble din Art. Maybe has an occupation in some form of art, but no I wouldn't say a bricklayer was an artist. Now a sculptor is an artist. A good word choice for the contest Mikey. Well done. Good luck. Nancy

Being an avid wordsmith, language nut, grammar freak I am obsessed with words. I may only write poetry, not essays at present, but I pride myself in putting my heart into whatever I write-whether it be a review on fanstory, a letter to the Editor of a national newspaper. Words are my tools and I try to use as many exquisite words as I can. I agree with you totally about the concept of artist-definition of which is someone who excels in his/her craft. Like you wrote, many of today's so-called artists whether in the field of literature, music or art are simply run-of-the-mill writers, musicians or painters-hyped up by the mass media. I would not call you a run-of-the-mill writer. You have a special way with words that I think a true poet possesses, so whatever he writes it will always be distinct. It is the combination of artistry with the word, as you described, creativity, sincerity and joy in the world around. I hope that I possess these qualities, people say I do. We also have a desire to impart our thoughts and feelings to others by our creations, otherwise we would not be doing it. Sorry, this is so long, but rarely do I get an opportunity to express myself so deeply and this is a subject I feel very strongly about-proper use of our beautiful English language. Excellent commentary, this is a quintessential piece of writing which admirably conveys the theme of the contest. Good luck in the contest. Faye

You make your points well. But I hasten to add that you are not an artist ... or a genius or a saint, guru, champion or god ... no, not even a prima donna or a diva.

Speaking of which, 'diva' is not a proper noun.

One typo:

'while *I* sat in my room listening to Barbara Streisand CDs?'

Loved this! Humble while bragging... that's hard to pull off, but you managed because you were honest. And I'm in agreement with how we no longer distinguish between great, good, and mediocre. Every kid in the class gets a ribbon nowadays. Competition is considered hurtful to the losers so now it's discouraged in schools. This new generation is already ruined, being taught to hate AMerica, for one thing. Bad ideas seem to have won out and we are no longer the same GREAT nation... more like mediocre. Pity, but that's always been the case over the history of mankind. Rome had its day. USA had its day. Now perhaps ISIS will have its day. The world is always changing winners and losers.

Love it, Mikey. Great discussion topic that we need more of around FanStory. You have a terrific way with people and that is a brilliant skill.

I see you are having tea again. I'm a coffee person, but well, whatever's your cup of tea. But, if you don't mind, I'll have some coffee.

I heard Brittany (Britney) Spears

while sat in my room listening to Barbara (Barbra) Streisand CDs?

Isn't Gaga good though? That woman is seriously a highly skilled and talented musician and performer.

Ah, but not all bricklayers are equal. Some are artists and some just smack the bricks into place.

You should go to Julliard (Juilliard)

Your circle of family and friends was most certainly complimentary. My experience was exactly the opposite. In fact when I informed "them" I was taking up creative writing, they promptly told me, I couldn't possibly write because I'm stupid and don't know shit. Well now, them's fightin' words where I come from. *wink* They might just be surprised what shit I know (about them). :)

requirements of the word "artist" in it's (its) true meaning ...

Very fun essay and argued passionately for the word artist as the contest requires, Mikey. It's very interesting reading about other people's experiences and what has led them to where they are today.

Excellent. I, myself, would like to think of myself as an artist. To a point I am. I can put words together and make sense most of the time. I do know what you say as true. I look at my poetry and say it doesn't matter what others think of it and know right off the bat I lie. The world, I believe, lives in an exaggerated state of mind. Anything that affects any of our senses must be the best ever. Any how. Enjoyed your piece very much.

It's true, when I was young, only the best players won the trophies, when my daughters were playing sport, all team members won a trophy, it means that striving tends to take a back seat. I'm like you, a musician, songwriter, guitarist, singer, I'm 72 now, fame fortune and artistry passed me by. Oh well, sigh! Well done, I liked this article, being a member of FS makes one take pride and strive a little harder, well done, ending article, well written, blessings, Roy.
