I felt the emotion in this piece. Having lost my own grandmother only a couple of years ago I can relate to the feelings which you must've been going through. A strong, emotional piece of writing, quoiky, I couldn't find anything to critique. Thanks for sharing...Jacob

This is not any easy thing to write about, and you did it well. I especially liked: 'She teetered at the edge of finality'.

One SPAG:

IN BRIEF DESCRIPTION: 'grandmother out lives all' ('out lives' should be 'outlives').

G'day mate. WOW! My sixes haven't arrived or you would surely have one. That was a very beautiful thing to read, thoroughly professionally written and I applaud you. Cheers Fez

This is a touching essay (encouraging, too, about passing). A tribute to the love you had for your grandma. I enjoyed reading this wonderful piece. Thank you. Marilyn/BeasPeas

Dear Quoiky, I love your story. Your opening line a clear introduction into the kaleidoscope that we call memories.

Your reason for staying with Grandma's is the only reason, for the simple love of spending those last cherished minutes together -- chances that never return.

The line Advice that makes you think in black in white is a brilliant example of pure clarity.

Beautifully told.

This is such a touching, heartfelt write, Quoiky. It's not unlike the scene that played out on the day my own mother-in-law passed away after a five year battle against pancreatic cancer, a battle she valiantly fought but sadly lost. I'm sure there's not a day that goes by when you're not thinking of her, and rightfully so I'm sure.

A very nice tribute to your mother-in-law's memory. ~Dean

Nicely done. Not overdone. It could have been longer and I, for one, would not have minded a bit. My mother in law just died and her last moments, according to those who were there, sound very similar. You must be glad you were there even if, as you say, it was for your own selfish reasons. I certainly see no selfishness in what you did.

Thanks

This is a nice write. You use description and dialogue well to re-create for the reader this last night with "Grandma." You are right--things become quite clear in the black and white context of life and death. I especially like your line "teetered at the edge of finality." I spent just such a night with my dad three years ago.

I always find the deathbed stories to be very interesting and comforting assuring me there is life in the here after.
My mother who was in a coma and paralyzed suddenly sat up with her arms reaching toward heaven with a big smile on her paralyzed face. My grandfather told my dad, it's time to go now son. They're here to fetch me. I'ill see you later and he died.We Will see them again. Lovely story. Nancy

This is a beautiful tribute to your mother-in-law, and a good lesson for all.
Death cannot be avoided, and your willingness to spend whatever time you could with
your loved one, gave you even more wonderful memories.
