The tone of this poem reminds me of Alice Walker's "When I Am Old I Shall Wear The Color Purple" (not sure if this is the exact title)

She ought be proud, and you in turn ought be proud of her, since purple represents all the heartache and heartbreak a person endures throughout their life, regardless of background or circumstance.

She earned that right, as you say, & so have you. It takes courage to write these from a background of shadows & stardust & show them to complete strangers, especially both if & when the people you're observing aren't aware of your observing them.

Blessings,
Shane

I could easily visualize the lady through your free verse. The colors were quite bright and the "elephant-wrinkled legs" very vivid. Yes, at a certain age we've paid our dues and "earned the right" to flaunt it! More cheers- Joan

Thank you so much for reviewing this. I know it must have only been paying 2 cents by then.

I need to hit the gym myself, but when it comes to beach time, who cares? Age sags us closer to the ground but that sure does not mean to drop out. Good poem. You probably won't be hearing as much from me. I'm backing away from the site to focus on publishing and other things.

Hi Teresa,

Your poem is written well and tells a great story. I enjoyed reading it very much. I won't even go in the pool anymore because I keep getting more wrinkled every day. Oh the joy of growing old. I'll be 78 on the 29th of this month.

This lady was at least your age and lots of wrinkles but I'm glad she didn't feel self-conscious and just had fun:) Thanks for the great review. Sorry for the delayed response.

Love it!
As Spring finally approaches I think about the summer wardrobe with apprehension.
I fight the waves of regret that, once again I didn't magically lose ten pounds, instead
they found a few others:0
My 'better self' knows that while my arms may have an extra ripple, I must remain
grateful that I have two arms that work!
A noble thought--expressed well!

It sounds like your trip was very inspirational, Teresa! Your words indeed allowed me to envision this proud lady, and I agree that she is a lady to imitate. Lovely descriptions.
Smiles,
Karyn :-)

Great imagery in the "red hibiscus" suit and "elephant-wrinkled" legs. I like the thought of her walking along the shore, the borderline between two elements as her age puts her on a similar borderline between this life and the next.

Yes, I can see the lady enjoying her day at the beach. I like your use of the color words. I sense this woman did not care that society was always about the "beautiful" people. Good for her. I see nothing to change. Thanks for sharing a poem about what "normal" people do at the beach--they are like us in so many ways. I am pleased you were able to see her beauty and describe it so well.
