You have penned a real tear jerker, Mikey! The line where your cold heart makes a cold flame is poignantly descriptive. Also-the line about not needing to watch the candle burn out. Good luck with the contest! Caroline

Hi mikey,
I think that you did a great job here and it does have a very plausible back story that adheres to the contest rules and count. As if we already did not know this. Lol Great job here my friend. God bless

Pretty cool. Nice little story and it adheres to the contest rules. I think. Ha! All of these lyrics are so ingrained in those of us born before 1960. You grabbed the essence and produced a short story that was delightful. Drunken whore that she was. Well done. Lynda

Well okay Michaelcahill, I believe you have accomplished the poetic challenge at hand.

Woe this woman left a legacy not to be envied.. lol..

Ending superb.

I once sponsored a Beatle contest calked Beatle Up. It was fun and I provided the entrants with a link to everyone of their songs. It could be a story or a poem but they had to use at least 20 titles. It was fun and challenging. I opted to create a story and used 245 song titles.. wait maybe it was 145, but it was almost all of them. It was callled Dig A Pony and is in my port. Would love for you to check out, but don't review. I am quite proud of it.

Best wishes with the contest. You are a good writer.

This work has reached the exceptional level

Captures the mood of the song perfectly and creats a plausible backstory that fits the tone and wording as well. I think you have the beginnings of a great short story or even a novella here.

I love the slant you put on the poem. Eleanor's son and what would he have to say about the death of his mother. It is hard to forgive an addict. We never really know them. Their addiction gets in the way. Addicts may be part of our family, but in name only. Great work.

Great interpretation to this famous song. I was always intrigued by it and now reading the lyrics I can understand it better. Another best for those fabulous four.

As usual you write an excellent story. Until I saw your notes I thought it was personal the way you referred to your mum

Forgiveness? Redemption? I can't redeem you--that certainly isn't my area of expertise. Forgiveness would take a bit more of a man than I've grown to be.
love this comment/philosophy

Good personal write found here. Great interpretation of the song lyrics. Emotionally based with frustrations and what if's lingering in the mind.
Glad to hear that Father McKensie was still around to conduct the service.
Hope he didn't put too many to sleep. Enjoy the candle-scent, my friend.
Best wishes in the contest!
