This is a very good story. I liked your method of starting it with the story of the dog and then ending with the story of your dad. It's well written and held my attention all the way through. I think you have one typo. "My father died on January 2, 2014. He would have been ninety-one March 18, 2015. Mom called me to come help with Dad in early September of 2014." I suspect that you meant to say you dad died on January 2, 2015.

Thanks for reading Judy and for your observation on dates. You are of course correct. I screwed up a check yesterday as well. But get this .... I put 2013. Bill

Hello, my friend. Long time since we've connected. I am so glad to see your work once more. I am also back in the fold and have posted two chapters of my new novel.

I love the "feel" of this story, bill. Just as in all of your stories, one feels right there because of your wonderful imagery and imagination.

"If I ever saw him dressed in anything other than blue denim overalls, I don't recall it. He was in fact, a blue clad, gentle giant." (I can see him)
This is such a greaty story on many levels, Bill I am just sorry I don't have anymore sixes left. It certainly deserves all of those and more.

Hi

This is a very moving and emotive tale. One with a lot of passion and emotion coursing through it. A smooth flow of words and nice style.

Nicely done

Okay, the applause will begin when I stop crying. This reads exactly like a true story and is technically so well-written it was like watching a movie instead of reading. I loved the analogy at the end where you had seen that look before and the father's comment about not being afraid of dying, but afraid of living. Very powerful story. Rest assured that if I had a six left, it would be pasted on this story.

I've been on FS long enough to know better than post at the end of the week. With me though, when the muse is with me, I write. I'm glad you enjoyed and I appreciate your kind and generous feedback. Bill

What a lovely story, written with much heartfelt feeling and emotion. I am a dog lover, so the story about Duke was so wonderful. Dogs are so loyal and loving. I spotted couple of errors, Para 17, to my brothers and me. Para 18, Duke's low growl. Para 21, Duke's leg. Most enjoyable read. Faye

Yes, Bill I read Jeffrey's story, too, and assumed you took some inspiration from that. But you took it a step farther,
and related it back to the loss of your father.
I like that you relate these two events.
And I can understand why you would.
Really good job, Bill.
I'm sorry it's Saturday, and I'm sixless. Peace, Lee

Thanks for reading Lee and the kind feedback. For me, when the muse is with me, I write. I know it's better to release on Sunday. Also, my watch is broken, so I never have a clue what day it is. Bill

What can I say? this was such a beautiful, moving story. But I feel that the right place for the story to end is when Duke died. I do hope I don't offend you by saying this -- I certainly don't intend it.
Your father needs his own story, and I hope you will write it, using what you have already written, expanding on it.

Hi Adrian - thanks for reading and your kind feedback. The addition of my father's death is also a bit of social commentary. We allow animals to die humanely and with dignity, but deny that for ourselves. I'll certainly post some more stories about my father. He was in dementia at the end, short term memory was shot, but I was able to hear stories from long ago where every little detail was included. Don't be surprised to see some. Bill

Hi bhogg,

That is both a very lovely and a very moving tale. Your father must have been a very special man - a rare one today. Many would not have saved the puppy, and even fewer would have tended him so kindly at the end.

I agree, your story reminded me of Jeffrey's...both are excellent, sir,...interestingly, the next chapter of my book is going to be about my dog and seeing him to the end. I loved your storytelling and was with Pappy and Duke to the end. I was, however, a bit confused about adding your dad's story with Duke's...I kept thinking you would tie it to Duke's story...maybe you could write a transitional paragraph connecting the two, for your dad must have known Duke and his "pappy" too.

Hi Maggie - I could have ended with Duke. One of the things I was trying was a little social commentary. We have mechanisms to allow our pets to die in dignity, but don't allow for ourselves. I know for a fact that Dad would have chosen to check out. Warm regards, Bill

I just posted a dog story and a dad story with that exact same theme...
