Insightful piece. I enjoyed your take on a difficult subject.
As for suggestions, as a reader interested in this material, it might be helpful if you could expand a bit on exactly what material helped you and why it worked for you (or your character here as the case may be). The three years of improvement would seem to be the most valuable part of the story.
Again, nice work.
Good luck in the contest.

Excellent awareness of depression and darkness. Dr. Caroline Leaf is a good resource too. I would have written in this contest but I was traveling. You said what I would have so I am glad to read your story with a hot cup of tea! Have a joyfilled new year. flylikeaneagle

You did a great job at writing this informative piece for your entry, and I was educated about depression. You brought me into your world and helped me to understand a mental illness that I personally have never suffered from. That said, it is a personal essay, not a story, as the prompt called for. If I'm mistaken in my understanding of what the contest was calling for, I apologize. I'd love to read one of your stories; you're obviously a good writer. Nothing really technically wrong, as I can see. Cheers!

Thanks for your review and comments, I do agree with you about it being a story, I just continued on with the sentence that was suggested.

Good points. I think you may be right. Although, I believe the things that happened to us in our younger years affect our being normal. As to deficiencies, I think its a rip off. Not sure, but I think so. Drew

This is a very informative essay. You're right that a lot of people suffer from depression and don't know what to do to escape it.

it is an illness, that it can trick
illness, is that it can
One of my older sisters has suffered from depression for 55 years, and I know all too well those folks who think a person can just "pull herself together and get over it" - you convey that well
Your saying this is a choice, that you choose to see the light, seems to run counter to your discussing how this is a chemical imbalance and people who suffer from this disease can't just pull themselves out of it? Why aren't these contradictory?

Yes I see your point. It does take awareness to the problem, and medication, and then a technique for getting better. It is a chemical that is depleted, but can be replaced with the medication, In many cases, it is not needed after a period. Cognitive therapy is also a treatment. Everyone is different. Help is out there and that is the key. Thanks for taking the time to review.

This is such a candid piece. I liked best the parts about the depressed person not wanting anyone to know. so very true.
What would really make this effective is the HOW of letting yourself see the light, not let the depression in. That is the magic so many seek.

Hi Writer,
Your story is very well done, like something cooked to perfection. I did notice the first line in the second part of your story starts with Most people who suffer from depression had had (should the first had be have?) Other than that it's great. I enjoyed the read.

I like the Speaker's candor as he discusses the causes of depression (even his) and explains how he deals with it. I would like more focus on the "darkness" itself. Does it come all at once? In phases? Does it make the Speaker incapable of action? I have been extremely fortunate in my lifetime, never having suffered the debilitating effects of depression for long. I just wish to know more so I might empathize.
