Growing up in the sixties and and seventies, I have to admit knowing more about this subject than I care to admit. What a great job of incorporating all these things into your poem. :-)

"Down the Rabbit's Hole" Yes, life is life, and people will live their lives as they see it and will keep on doing things they want to do. NO one can tell them anything and they are always right. We have heard and seen that so many times. Well done, Dean.

I really enjoyed your rock-n-roll romp through druggie wasteland. Many have learned their lesson, many penning songs that do anything but glorify drugs- The Needle and The Damage Done- Neil Young; Goddamn The Pusherman- Steppenwolf and even Comfortably Numb by Pink Floyd- taken in it's entirety, The Wall is a condemnation of drugs, the lifestyle as half the album is about Syd Barrett- founding member of Floyd who went insane from drug use. If there is any doubt to the long term effects of drugs and alcohol, let me supplement your notes with:

The 27 club: Jim Morrison- alcohol/heroin; Jimi Hendrix- Alchohol/Barbituates; Janis Joplin- alcohol; Kurt Cobain- depression exacerbated by heroin; Brian Jones- drowning while drugged; Ron "Pigpen" McKernan- alcohol; Amy Winehouse..And these are just some of the drug/alcohol related deaths at the tender age of 27.

You find the right balance between a poem about rock and the "this is your brain on drugs" commercial.

The poem is mind blowing in form and presentation. You laid in the lyrics deftly with rhythm and rhyme in a free style extravaganza. Your author notes are outstanding. Having grown up in the 60s and been a hippy myself, i identify with all of it. Cocaine and marijuana were my thing back then. I am glad MJ is being decriminalized, finally. Up in Smoke is still my favorite movie comedy. You hit a home run on this one.

Hi Dean
I loved this, I grew up on many of these songs. I never did drugs, but most of my friends did(I was too scared)...I drank tequilia instead...
Still, your poem was a fun trip(pardon the pun) down memory lane.
Hey and Happy New Year...sorry I have not been around... Life has gotten a bit hairy for the moment...and I have very limited access to the internet. Our new house has no phone yet, and we are there a lot trying to get at leat the bathrooms done...we hope to be in fro Feb....then I can get back to my writing and Site time!

I have missed you, my friend.

I enjoyed reading your poem, as always:-)
Thanks again,
padumachitta

Wow! I love the juxtaposition of poetry, cinematography, song and images. You have put these together to bring home the message of the lethal yet attractive and magnetizing effect of drugs on a person. By using the fairy tale story of Alice in Wonderland you have made the message even more poignant. Try it, taste it, go down the Rabbit's hole and then you'll see yourself sucked into an abyss of no return. Well done!

Spooky, some of your best work both in the extensive author notes and your brilliant poetic composition.

I vividly remember Jefferson Airplane and Go Ask Alice and Timothy Leary espousing the benefits of LSD. The songs of that era beat many into submission to participate in the counter-culture. I suspect my Catholic fear of hell, beaten into me by the nuns, kept me on the straight and narrow, except for learning the exquisite benefits of aged single malt.

I doubt this would make much of an impact on the current generation since they likely only know a few of the performers of these songs and the atmosphere when they were introduced, but it is a poignant reminder to our generation of the pain, fear and heartache encouraged and showered upon us by those singing 'idols.' Those of us that survived those years will read this with an "oh yeah" moment - and if we are lucky, we will give thanks we are in one piece.

Animation is particularly good and the B&W is perfect to drive home your point. I do believe this is another 'show and tell' for your pastor. Jean

A six alone just for the effort that went into the this. Loved the presentation and interesting notes. Great stanza two with all the gerunds. I felt dizzy just reading it. You lead the reader through a slew of songs and singers, all or some tempted to find creativity through the use of drugs. They dull the conscious mind and let the sub-conscious take over.

Excellent whirl and twirl down Alice and Wonderland tunnel of drugs and 60s-70s drug directional music that made me roll down my window so I could sober up with fresh air after experiencing your talented cocktail in this creative piece. Well done, Dean.

Dean; I'm convincingly impressed And very astounded at all the energy, time and effort that you put into writing you put into writing this poem and it's extremely well written informative authors notes. Your explanation of your office notes to the references in the poem, is written is song titles, were helpful for those who did not understand where the short lyrics came from but with my music background is very familiar with what you have written in the references to the meanings that involve your topic and concept. You handled your rhyming very well with a were neither forced nor labored and very helpful containing the necessary concept and idea throughout the poem. The rhythms cadence, tempo and meter and movement all of very helpful in your reading your poem easily and clearly. Being a musician of 46 years I had not fallen deeply down the path of ruin by taking amounts unnecessarily of but I had dabbled into alcoholism. Thanks so much for sharing such a beautifully and well established poem and again I'm always amazed with your complete written knowledge of the topics and concepts that you write about.
I'm also amazed at your imagination which is gifted with your inventive and ingeniously creative resourcefulness. Thanks for sharing and posting and may the Lord be with you always Dean.
Alex
