Hey ...

My second time to read you this early morning!

You hit the nail on the head with this one. I feel the same way ... it's lost it's impact ... it's perceived by the younger generations with no more caution that "damn" or "shit". Our kids ere in the their forties and use it all the time. they weren't brought up that way ... just an assimilation into modern society.

To me, it's little more than a crutch for a more distinguished but equally shocking word.

It's a terrific write! Good luck in the contest .. and Happy new Year!

Alan

A good response to the prompt. What you say is true. Even back in the '70s I had a college professor who bemoaned the frequency with which such expressions were becoming the norm--so much so that they no longer carried any real meaning or even shock value. He said he no longer had anything appropriate to say when he hit his thumb with a hammer.

Things have certainly changed since Rhett Butler's shocking use of "damn" in Gone With the Wind." You touch on a major linguistic shift in American culture with your lament here, and I thought you handled well what some might consider a touchy or distasteful subject.
