Beautiful artwork that complements your Christmas story very well. I found it hard to understand but that must be me. I think the husband died on the road because of black ice. Then his wife and kids organised it all. Best wishes for the contest. And the same wishes to you and yours.

That was a lovely story, and had a great lesson to teach. I do worry at this time of year that there will be lots of unhappy people due to problems with alcohol, drunk driving being one of the worst. This is a well written story, and a wake-up call. Well done! Good luck in the contest! xsx Sandra

Thank you so much, Sandra. I always feel a special empathy for people with addictions this time of year. I struggle with a terrible sweet-tooth and there's stuff everywhere. I can only imagine something worse like alcohol. Anyway, so kind of you to read and review my story in such a gracious manner. Warm regards, Bev

This was a great pleasure to enjoy as a reader. Very uplifting and true to life I thought. As a writer, WOW. I'm so lucky to have found this place. I hear show don't tell all the time. It's when I see it in action that it truly begins to sink in as more than a catch phrase. The scene where he's described as a drunk and he breaks into a sob is amazing. I've no doubt it would take me half a page of blathering to "tell" what you "showed" in so very few words. Just wonderful. A great story and no doubt a strong contender. Good luck, mikey

That was a heart-warming story so apt this Christmas season. It is also what people should do all year round, feel for others and offer friendship and help. Well narrated, excellent characters and dialogue and thoroughly enjoyable. Good luck in the contest. Faye

This is nice, strangers meeting, with a seed of doubt but eventually the plot made in heaven, made them trust each other to give way for the Christmas tree to be finally cut and allow Christmas to happen in that lonely house deserted by a departed father and friend of Rick. I enjoyed it. Excellent.

Great Christmas story. Well written with lots of descriptive writing to engage the reader. Great contest entry as well.

A thick log caught fire and fell forward, hitting the stove's door with a thud. [great bit of detail that bring realism to your reader]

A warm meal and friendly faces are always nice. Warm house and conversations are last a long time. Glad that she can get a tree for the season and they can get to know each other during the season of joy. Nice story. I had to make chicken tortilla soup for the family. Come on over! Merry Christmas. flylikeaneagle

A beautiful story, with a bonding of mother and son with this stranger from her husband's past. Suddenly, after being really sceptical, mother and son are able to relate to the man who was a friend of his dad and her husband.
All three needing each other, and because of this common bond they are able to finally connect.
Enjoyable read.

Blessings to you and your family, Bev, and wishing you a wonderful Christmas and New Year.

Joan

Very touching story, and the loneliness of Christmas without your spouse is really felt by Jan and comes across well. The fact that they have to skimp on Christmas adds to the feeling of emptiness. The arrival of the stranger, Richard, is introduced well. The lack of trust Jan shows is sensible, as one never knows what to expect these days. Richard presents a credible story, although it's news to Jan about her husband being an alcoholic. We don't know what has brought Richard out at this time with a desire to see David. He is now in trouble himself, evidently relapsed. The meeting is good all around. Jan and her son have a chance to do a kindness and Richard is going to chop down a Christmas tree for them. This reminds me of the radio shows that our group performs. It would be that kind of story. (I question whether you need the introduction about Curtis and the dinner invitation that doesn't get delivered. Just start with Jan's dream about her husband. See how that works.) Great story, but I think it stands without that. Best of luck in the contest. judi
