Nostalgia takes many forms and is often bound up in the places of our past. Not all the memories are happy ones and the time comes when it is best to move on. Nonetheless, the rose-tinted specs are precious, too!

A beautiful poem, Janet. There are many such abandoned houses on these prairies. I always spend a few minutes wondering at the stories that were born inside the slanting walls. The rhyme is strong and the meter very good.

I'm so sorry to hear that your niece's health has deteriorated. I know you were so hopeful a little while back. How can you not be reminded of this sadness? It will affect the holidays for all those who love her.

Thank you Patti for your thoughtful and sincere review. I'm always fascinated by old houses and cabins as I wonder about the people who lived in them.
Thank you too for your thoughts about my niece. Since her last trip to the Mayo Clinic, she is able to control her pain better which is making it easier on her family. Hoping to enjoy this Christmas with her.
Thinking of you and your family at this holiday time. My prayers are with you.
    Merry Christmas

I have often thought, when passing by abandoned homes, what is the story of that home? who used to live there? who were they?

You captured that idea and mental image quite well.

Merry Christmas

I love the photo and the landscape. The verses evoke the imagery. It makes me wonder what became of the family that called the house a home and why now no one lives there.

This is such a touching and quiet poem, Janet. I love the nostalgia in it. Old homes all are filled with stories of families. Hopefully, their memories are good ones.
I'm so sorry to learn of your niece and her struggles this Christmas. I hope she is able to take in some joy.
Rose.

Hi Janet, this is a most beautiful yet haunting poem my friend, your wonderful words have an eeriness about them yet they are lovely to read, Ghosts of the past often come back and become subjects of our poetry, I sincerely hope that your niece pulls through, I lost my 24 year old daughter last December, so I know what you are feeling, God Bless.

You've created a wonderful write here, Janet, one that speaks to that well-known phrase, "If these walls could talk"

An old, abandoned house is a lot like a ghost in may ways. They hold and store memories, those whispered musings of bygone days, lost loved ones, and times past. A house is just a structure made up of mortar, brick, wood, and a few nails, and such. It takes a family living in it to make it a home. Once that family leaves or moves away, if it's never re-inhabited then any new memories cease, and the old ones are trapped inside forever. At least as long as the house is still standing.

Again, beautifully done, Janet, and Merry Christmas to you & yours. ~Dean

Thank you Dean for a thoughtful and encouraging review. Truly, a house is just a structure of mortar, brick, wood and a few nails - will a lot of nails in our house but without a family - it is just that - a structure and not a home.

Yes, the striking feature of your post is the sudden change of mood as you contrast the house in its glory days with its present state of neglect. I too, as a child, lived in a house which was left empty after our family moved and i recognise the sadness that seeing/recalling the old place brings.

Even when an old home is abandoned it inherits the personalities of those who once lived in it. This comes out clearly and succinctly in the poem. I would suggest you cut some of the adjectives like; 'the golden sun' which is like dead wood and is not paying its dues. Indeed all adjectives are an indulgence in the frame work of poetry. Best wishes. -Ekim777
