This poem is a sad commentary on despair, giving up hope on life, preferring death instead. I enjoyed the rhyme, and the gloomy graphics and stark background enhance the somber mood.

You tell a somber story, Dean. Not that it doesn't need to be said, it's just that the genetics and chemical balances in some of our bodies leave no choices, options or hope. Suicide has always been with us and I think in some instances, justified. But we should never quit trying to reach out because for some, they just need a person to express their depression and know that someone is interested. Great story and a great message, my friend.

At first I thought this was an incredibly chilling and creepy poem. Once I read to the end and reach your author notes, I was very pleasantly surprised. What a truly novel and clever way to convey a very important message for parents. You're absolutely right - life is far too precious to just throw away! Wonderful atmosphere, rhyming and flow. Very well done!

Thanks, BF, I'm very pleased that you thought so. Some have tried to tell me that I'm glamorizing suicide, but that couldn't be further from the truth. It makes me wonder if, sometimes, people actually read our work at all, or if they're simply "skimmers".

Creepily relevant to our current reality, unfortunately. I hardly look at the news these days as it's filled with insanity. If I dwelled on that, I'd quickly become paralyzed with hopelessness. Thanks for the Greek mythology lesson; I learn something new every day!!

Suicide is one of the most selfish act, and one of the cruelest things a person can inflict on anyone. I've intervened in a couple, and those that lived went on to recover from their depression, and have lived happy lives. They would have missed so much if they had succeeded in death.
People who think that they have 'no choice' and commit suicide often forget those who they will really hurt - and it's not the person they feel is causing them the grief. Its all those in their lives that they are not thinking about at all in their self-absorbed sorrow. You're so right - if someone you love seems different and withdrawn - talk to them. To get help if they need to. I've seen way too many people who spend a lifetime wondering why they didn't see the signs, and why they did nothing to lift their loved one out of despair and/or did nothing stop them from committing suicide. A great poem, Dean. Perhaps you saved some lives with this poetic.

I found it interesting how you incorporated very serious subject matter with a touch of horror. This has reminded me that I know of three young men who committed suicide. God, I'm depressed.

I was thinking about my best friend in high school who took his own life when I wrote this, Lou. I pray I will see him again, we were inseparable, like brothers. The note they found had just three words on it. "I'm so tired", was all it said. The sad part is, he probably left subtle hints but no one picked up on them. Hence, my poem, and it's plea to talk to those you care about if you feel something isn't "quite right".
