Nice mathematical poem for the kids to learn to count backwards. How great to make it fun. Good rhyming verse which keeps you engaged. I like how the last one was planted to grow into a tree.

Hi Brooke
I was having some fun today with one of the women at the drug store. Bernadette was cleaning shelves for the big tour on Thursday, while I was putting away the wholesale order. They've begun playing Christmas music, and there's this one song by Gene Autry called "Nine Little Reindeer". (Bernie has worked at the drug store for a few years. She's not new, like me. And she hates listening to the Christmas music, the same tape for seven weeks!) So, as I passed her in the aisle, I'd start singing:
One little, two little, three little reindeer
four little, five little, six little reindeer
seven little, eight little, nine little reindeer
pooping in the snow!" ...it's basically the tune of "Ten Little Indians". So funny! Ya gotta have a little fun~

Anyway, I enjoyed your counting poem, and I know the kids would too. Those squirrels are smart critters, preparing for winter so they won't starve. The white oak acorn is best, and keeps a long time. More than one settler survived on acorns during winters long ago.

So much more than just a counting rhyme, a cohesive narrative story too with anecdotes about the old oak tree and, of course, a most satisfying ending with the squirrel burying the last one to plant the new tree. I loved your swing/ping rhyme, delicious when read aloud!

I enjoy your counting poems. There are so many variations! And the idea of a squirrel planting a tree for his descendants future harvests is a good sentiment. Lovely! We should all learn from that wise squirrel.
