I enjoyed your vividly descriptive poem very much Jmf. Excellent imagery throughout this well written sonnet style poem.
So rest beside the hearth and lift a glass
for all who wisely know, this too shall pass.
Wonderful!

lovely sonnet about season's change
good formatting; strong meter, appropriate rhyme scheme
the turn 'But wallowing in pity for the day' brings the voice back from a moment of complaining about the loss of summer to a more accepting 'So rest beside the hearth and lift a glass
for all who wisely know, this too shall pass.'
Nice mix of:
personification - garden gate stands still against the cold
frigid winds of winter now betray
alliteration -garden gate,
enjambment - My memories of summer days belie
and bid this time of twilight disappear.
winter winds begin to whistle
Lovely poem.

'The Garden Gate' is an extremely well-written and thought-provoking piece. To me a bare garden seems so very sad. It was a pleasure to both read and review a work of this standard.

Autumn for me, seems to provoke memories of the past, besides the season that is behind us ....Time marches on, & Fall reminds me of those who have passed, & the author notes, yes, nothing or nobody last here on this earth forever.....Garden gates, or those we love....Though memories can live on...Be it even, what your mom told you.
I liked your rhyming poem...Take Care.....C.

This is such a nice poem to read at this time of year. I actually don't mind it at all right now. However, knowing the flowers and greenery is done for nearly six months can be pretty depressing if one dwells on the subject.
I enjoyed this immensely. You are a poet at heart. It was written in sonnet form. Awesome. Drew

She is right, and you are wise to know it! :) I like putting my garden to bed for the Winter. I cover my softer plants with the fallen leaves, it is like tucking your child inside lovely warm blankets for the night. This is a lovely Autumnal/Winter poem, written in a lovely sonnet form. :) Sandra

Oh boy, do I feel that melancholy that comes with dried up flowers, brown grass and bare trees ... this is written so beautifully, Janet. The meter is spot on! The sad garden gate - the lovely colors of summer all but gone. Winter here is very, very long. We won't see green again until May. I enjoyed reading this one, it flows and definitely leaves this reader wallowing in a bit of pity for the season gone.

Thank you Pattie for your thoughtful and encouraging review and the special six stars. Winter started way to early here in the mountains of the Carolinas. I hoping for Indian Summer as I didn't get everything cleaned up.
Hope you are going well.

Hi Janet,
I hate when that happens. Me too. Suddenly there is 8 inches of snow on top of the sad and dilapidated day lilies!
And I see the kids' bicycles have fallen down on top of the roses alongside the garage ... the whole place looks like shit. And winter is here! I got my van stuck today.

Great reminiscing on the seasons end.
Strong visual language.
Good structure for easy reading.
Your rhyming pattern and pacing gave this a great tempo to read.
Thanks for writing.

One elderly lady once said that her favorite Bible verse was, "And it came to pass..." Nice preparatory poem for winter's arrival. You catch the spirit of late fall well in your words. Well done!
