I remember reading the book, "Burry My Heart at Wounded Knee" (hope I'm remembering the title correctly). This is yet another terrible example of how our Native Americans were treated. You did a very good job weaving history into a poem. Hugs, Lou

I am glad I read your notes before reading the poem, mystery poet. Your story is well told and a sad write about the massacre at Ft. Lyon.

Your rhyming, both perfect and proximate, is well done. Your words move with a nice rhythm. I think, if I were you, I'd remove the commas after Wrinkles and Grey in the first two lines to increase the flow of your words.

Thank you for sharing, and good luck in the contest! Alana

Interesting piece of poetic history lesson. However, if what the author noted is true, what took congress so long. And what will they do about it?

It is true and to learn the real story Google can probably help you understand what occurred and the results, Thank you for an intelligent review.

And then Chivington triumphantly marched into the court house displaying scalps and body parts and the crowd cheered. This is the second time that Black Kettle and his band of Cheyenne were attacked in their sleep. The first was by Custer in a winter campaign. When they came into Colorado, they were guaranteed peace and told to fly the American flag. Rather than fight, broken, Black Kettle wrapped himself in the flag and sang his death song. And Chivinton- a preacher- was more than happy to oblige. A truly disgusting chapter of American history.

I was in hopes someone of intelligence would read this and comment and you did. Thank you. Preacher of what and for whom? It surely wasn't of the Lord Jesus's teachings. Appreciate you.

Don't quote me on it, but I think he was a Methodist preacher. When it came time to raise a militia, Chivington took charge. He hated Indians and also participated in other battles/massacres. If you haven't, read Dee Brown's Bury My Heart at Wounded Knee.

Black Kettles band. Chivington's remarks, it's said, were, 'Kill them all, nits make lice.' They mutilated the corpses, taking not only the scalps, but the genitalia too. He left the Army a disgraced man. He remained a worthless loser for the remainder of his life. I was hoping, upon reading his short bio. that the Indians got hold of him, no such luck. He died of cancer. Good luck in the contest. Kenny

Yes, he did. Glad you reviewed. America sees it through rose colored glasses but don't believe in ethnic cleansing. Hope to see you in the voting booth. Many good pieces there.

This is a really good entry into the History Buff contest. The 'white' people have committed many atrocities towards our fellow man, and got away with it. It is only now, we are looking at these events with horror. This poem is just one example. Good luck! xsx sandra

This is one of many blood stained history pages that we never learned in school. Our own dark past haunts us and the hate that could do this still smolders in America. It is good that you have posted something to enlighten those who look at history through rose colored glasses.

Your poem set me off reading about US Army colonel, Rev. Chivington and his heroic deeds in the face of those vicious women and toddlers. Excellent.

The Whites have more crimes to confess, much bigger than Sand Creek. From the times of Columbus unto Little Big Horn, The White's action was criminal. This is very well written.
