I've never experienced migraine pain, been blessed not to have to deal with this;
Sorry to hear that this severe pain is part of your life-
"in darkened room"
sometimes the light of day doesn't always benefit;
Might I suggest peppermint oil when one of these attacks occur? I rub it along my forehead when my eyes begin to throb--I find relief in under thirty minutes. I know the pain is not as intense as migraines; worth a try. You could also try applying it to the back of your neck--one of my daughter's girlfriends rubs it into this area. Feel better soon, Teresa.

Really great visuals in this - I've not had migraines, but have ocular migraines - yup, in the eye. The pain is not the same by any stretch, but you can't see at all. I've heard that caffeine is pretty good when they first start and help to somewhat lessen intensity. blessings to you with this wretched pain. AT=/

Thanks AT. Yep, my wife gets ocular migraines but they don't usually last long and no pain with them. she usually just closes her eyes and rest for maybe a half hour and then it is gone. Thanks for the great review:)

I gotta admit to you, Teresa, that when I first read the title of your piece, I read it as Brain-Pan, a quirky idiom for our minds. Then, as I began reading, I reread it and saw I was wrong, but "Brain-Pain" was in fact the title. Made a lot more sense after that, LOL.
"...firecrackers lit
red hot embers
in my brain." -- Now, there's an unpleasant image, but it's also a very apt description of what it feels like, at times, when an exceptionally horrible migraine takes hold of you. I have them too, and take medication for them. My heart pumps blood at just 20% capacity of a normal person, so I have severe oxygen deprivation which brings them on. They are truly a nightmare!
Excellent work, and well described. :}

Oh, I'm so sorry for your oxygen deprivation. The less oxygen, the better your creative mind works though:). What kind of medication do you take for the migraines? I'm on Nortripoline - it had been working until surgery.
-
I take BOTOX injection therapy to help regulate my migraines, Teresa. They are very severe...my migraines, I mean. Plus I'm a chronic insomniac, which doesn't help the situation much. I get a lot of writing done that way though, LOL.

I heard about botox. I have to travel about 150 miles to get that done but it would be well worth it. Hopefully they will lesson as I recover more from surgery:)

For your sake, Teresa, I hope they do too! :}

Sounds terrible, I have never suffered from migraines, people have told me how awful they are. Good use of descriptive language to describe your pain and the effects. Hope you feel better soon. Faye

I suffer from awful migraines myself, so similar to the torment you've described in your powerful poem. I take Tramadol for them. I hope that you'll be given something to help you more.

You describe a migraine exactly like what my daughter says her migraines feel like. Last October she had a grand mal seizure in my house that they said was due to her migraines.mscared me to death. She takes medication to prevent and then one if she feels one coming on. I hope yours eases up and gives you relief, Teresa.
Smiles,
Karyn :-)
